I have 6 chickens, 2 of them we have had for about a year. In the spring we brought home four more, not too small in size, the old ladies didn't like them but tolerated them. lately the old ladies have been picking on one of the new hens. I saw them they had her pinned down and were pecking at her. Every time she sees the old ladies she freaks Any ideas why they are suddenly turning on her and what do I do?
Thanks for any suggestions
Liz

Angela has it figured out. Those hens can get mighty mean when it comes to establishing the pecking order. If that doesn't work then it is time for the stew pot.

I had one older hen that was determined to kill our new chicks, which were about half grown. We had to put her in a broody box pen for about a week. It knocks them out of their peckin order and makes then almost like the stranger in the pen. You just have to make sure that the caged hen can see the rest while you pet and love them, but not her, each day. Worked like a charm for me.
