One of my hens was walking around slow, her buns were a little lower than the other hens. I wondered if she was ill. The all of a sudden she squatted a bit and out popped out an egg, right on the driveway gravel. It was soft but formed correctly and the other chickens rushed over and ate it, soft shell, white & yoke.
She just started laying on Sept. 1. We have had normal eggs, a bit tinier than what I was expecting but hard and normal, inside and out.
Please tell me what happened today and if it is a sign of anything to be watching out for.

I agree, you'll need to supplement with some oyster shell. Also, be sure you are feeding a layer ration. This does happen occasionally. And, yes, chickens WILL eat their own eggs, but you want to discourage this and NOT let it become a habit. If this happens in the coop, I will separate out that hen for a few days to break her of the cycle, and then return her to the flock in about a week. It worked for me with my last eggeater.

Stephanie, this happens sometimes. I have seen a few here. But they seem to be fine and then start laying real eggs. If she's just started laying I'm sure she'll be fine. Maybe give them some oyster shell in their feed to help shells become stronger and harder.
I hope someone else knows why this happens. And chickens LOVE eggs!
