Hello, All!
I'm going to be fostering a Hackney Pony, starting next week. I got an email from a friend with a nearby rescue, asking for help for a POA mare, health score 1 ( out of 10). That mare's rescue needs to rehome some adoptable animals to make room for a herd of 10 that are owner surrender.
Anyway....
Does anyone have Hackney experience? This 4 yr old was pulled from a broker's pen. She was bought by a rodeo to be a bucking horse (?) but she would not buck so they put her in what was probaly a kill pen. She accepts a saddle and carries kids on lead line. I am told she is friendly. I think she must be under 13 hands , as I am told she is too small for an adult to ride.
I'll post more when she gets here. When I know her size, I'll be looking to barter, buy or borrow unneeded pony tack ( bit, bridle,bareback pad, surcingle if possible)for schooling her. If you or someone you know has gotten out of ponies, please let me know. I want to help bring her along, and I'm on that eternal softhearted budget of someone who just keeps caring!
Her names is Pebbles, but I'll call her Petra, which means " rock".

I am tearing up, reading about the safe haven these horses have found with these angels!

Nigel actually ended up in a wonderful home with a couple that takes in horses that have serious issues. One that was to be used as a sacrifice, one that was abused to the point he is crippled, one rodeo horse with broken knees, etc etc. They have several that were unbelievable abused and those horses are now happy and handleable. They have had Nigel for almost a year and when he went there you couldn't even touch him. Now you can halter him, farrier his front feet, pet him in front of the loins and he will actually come up and touch you of his own accord. They are miracle workers and angels in disguise. They are amazing and wonderful people.

Poor, poor Nigel. Where did he end up?
The very thin POA will stay at the rescue, and the Hackney is coming here to be fostered. We do have visiting kids who would love to be ponied on her, if she realy is safe for that. I would like to ground drive her- and oh, it would be a dream to own a harness that would fit her AND my donkeys. But I'll tuck that away for another day!

If she is a POA she has to be under 14.2. I have a very small amount of experience with Hackney's. We had one at the rescue named Nigel. He has spent several years with a man that had repeatedly (almost daily) beaten him with a baseball bat. You still can't touch him behind the rib cage. Anyway, they are built for pulling not riding. Small riders no problem but larger ones would be to much. I am sorry I don't have any tack and can't really help with that but I wish you the best of luck with your new family member. Would very much love to see the photo's.
