Has anyone here studied animal massage? Any licensed practitioners out there? Any veterinarians with experience working with animal massage therapy/therapists?
I keep thinking about studying small animal massage (mostly cats and dogs) but it's difficult to find out anything about licensing. The schools themselves say that licensing varies from state to state--and no one seems to be able to direct me to the proper agency in my state (Maine) to find out more. It's too great an investment (both in money and in time) to finish--only to find out that I can't get licensed.
Granted, I only consider doing this as a sideline and a big part of what drives me is the thought of helping shelter animals and other animals in need. That said, I would at least need to be able to make enough money to pay off the tuition and related costs to the training, as well as having a hope of covering ongoing operating costs.
Any advice for me?

Its funny because I have been looking into animal message too. :) I can't seem to find much info on it though.
I'm getting into a Veterinary program this year so hopefully I will find more info on it there.

Yes, it is discouraging. I'll check out what Hobby Farms had to say about it.
I'll ask my veterinarian too. Thanks Zan.
I had never heard of the Tellington T-Touch method. Thanks Cindy. I'll look into that as well.

I agree with Prairiehawk. Actually, I believe that Hobby Farms covered the subject of animal massage a couple of issues back. You should check with the veterinary licensing board in your community before starting, at least.

I explored animal massage years ago and was dismayed to find out that some states are trying to make it illegal without a veterinarian to oversee it. Just another case of too much regulation. the Tellington T-touch method is similar to animal massage but requires you take a course from a T-touch practitioner. and it doesn't require a veterinarian.
