My 3 year old doe is losing her hair. She kidded in December but weaned her babies when they were about five weeks old. Now one side of her back is almost bald from rubbing--anyone have any advice on this?

Thanks all for the information. I am giving her the minerals seperately to be sure she gets all of them, I have given her a shot of Bo-Se and I made her a spiffy coat. None of the other goats are showing any signs of this and they are all dark where she is white, so I think I would see lice--so I will assume it is hormonal and mineral related for the next few weeks--then if she doesn't improve we will take a one hour drive to the closest large animal vet...that's always fun! Thanks again, what a great resource--what did farm chicks do before the internet!

Lisa, I saw this somewhere about someone's doe would lose her hair when she got pregnant. Both times so far. Now I have no idea where I saw it. Someone's goat blog. She was a young doe. Sandy has little spots where there's not much hair. But not bald. I love your blog. Your stories are hilarious! And you are milking! Yay! I cannot wait to get more goat milk. I miss it.

I third it! I got my one doe in spring and she was full of lice and mites. I used DE dust and it got rid of them fast. I would also get her on minerals. All my goats have all the minerals they want.
Good Luck, and don't feel this is a bad thing. All goats and chickens get crawlies. Just stay on it and get um gone!

I second what Sherry said. It could be a mineral deficiency or she could have lice/mites. I know that Hoegger's Goat Supply store has some really good shampoo's that treat lice, mites, and mange ( like Sherry said, this is the time of year for them). I would also get a dairy mineral block or livestock mineral block ( you don't want to get one that says its for both sheep and goats because they are actually more geared for sheep than goats. Its better to get one that says its for dairy or livestock and it will better meet your goats mineral needs.) and give it to her free choice. If she is lacking a mineral, her body knows it and will eat anything that has that mineral(s) in it. Please be careful when giving selenium because you can give your goat to much. Some symptoms of selenium deficiency are identical to those of selenium toxicity. A doe's failure to conceive can be the result of either selenium deficiency or toxicity. Kidney failure, stillbirth and abortions also may be attributable to either end of this spectrum. By contrast, hair loss in the beard and flank regions and cracks and deformities in horns and hooves may reveal an over-abundance of selenium in the goat's diet.
Sorry, I don't want to scare you. I give my goats a Selenium paste that has some vitamin E in it to them once a month ( you can also find this at your local feed store) and so far I haven't had a problem.

its the time of year for lice and mites just a thought. you could use DE on her. its safe for lactating animals. i am thinking you know she needs loose minerals not a block also with selenium. some times if mineral deficient they will shed hair faster than it grows back. hope it helps lisa. i am still learning too. so maybe some one else will have a different thought. happy days sherrye
