Posted - Dec 27 2006 : 11:42:42 AM sigh..hubby called county ordinance to see about what the rules/regulations are on having any type of backyard foul..seems that now you have to get written permission from any neighbor who's property your property touches..well..I have 4 neighbors and I know that for sure 2 of them are extremely picky/particular neighbors..so..that certainly won't go over at all with them. So..I won't be having any city foul after all..sigh. ..and I so wanted to have a few..but it's not to be here. Just needed to vent..thanks for understanding.:0)

Posted - Dec 29 2006 : 05:32:40 AM Tina Michelle - you're in FL, so you might find this site interesting... www.banana-tree.com. It's a nursery that sells tropical plants and seeds, like citrus trees, banana trees, coffee plants etc. Perhaps you could become a "banana farmer"! Or at least provide some fruit for your family.
I wanted to send my dad a banana tree for Christmas and he reports that he is very pleased with the quality of their plants and the instructions that they sent on how to plant and take care of them. They sent a few extra coffee plants just in case, and were also not too expensive either.

Posted - Dec 28 2006 : 12:31:42 PM LOL ..I knew the peacock thing was for a good laugh..I have heard them before..LOL ..anyhow..I got outside today and just immersed myself in watching the birds at the feeder and taking pictures of them..what a nice relaxing time..even in the city..of course it is rather interesting to see how the birds react to the sounds of airforce jets and loud vehichles driving by...they get all in a tither actually and it takes them a few minutes to calm down.I watched them and observed the chatterings they did back and forth, quite amazing.(ruby crowned kinglets, house sparrows, and house finches)
a beautiful day outside today.
now it's time to plan dinner and get a few indoor things accomplished.
have a great evening everyone.

Posted - Dec 28 2006 : 11:43:53 AM Hi Tina,
Great pics. Don't you just hate busybodies who tell you what to do with your own land? Those two women definitely have wayyyy to much time on their hands. I am fortunate now that I have good neighbors. I had one when I first moved here years ago tell me that the fence was on their land and not mine. Well a survey showed them wrong and they didn't speak to me for 10 years until they finally moved. Ahhhhhh, peace at last. Tee hee. Now all of my neighbors are great and we all talk and noone tells anyone else what to do.
Blessed are those who love the soil,
Patsy

Posted - Dec 28 2006 : 11:30:53 AM Ohhhh Lisa, are you tryn to be naughty. Have you ever heard a peacock scream. They can be very loud. Then again that may be what the neighbors need. You know I can not for the life of me figure out when you own your land , pay your taxes, pay your bills, support your family where does any one else have the right to come in and tell you how to do things. Sometimes I feel like like I'm very anti government. Sorry if I have offend anyone but that is the way I feel sometime. I apologize for that comment. |

Posted - Dec 28 2006 : 09:10:41 AM Hehe! Geese are not exactly quiet, are they, Tina. Hey, I know, why not get a peacock?!?!?!? I hear they are nice, quiet birds. ROFL
I like all my neighbors - they are all 1/2 mile away, where we cannot even see eachother. Once when we apologized to Bill & Norman about the sheep getting out and turning up in their backyard, they said "oh don't worry - they can come over anytime. " :^)

Posted - Dec 28 2006 : 08:50:16 AM and p.s. the angora bunnies sound quite interesting. I have had a few pet bunnies in the past.
My interest wasn't so much in actually chickens per say..but in a type of heritage breed of geese called Pilgrim geese, and I just don't think that the neighbors would appreciate that very much..ha. I can just imagine them wagging their tongues about things then..LOL I laugh when I think of it. aww well..in due time..things will work out.

Posted - Dec 28 2006 : 08:42:29 AM gee, how to explain my 2 neighbors that I can almost guarantee will object..the one..the first day we moved in.. within 5 minutes of meeting her..she informed me that her fence was hers and if she moved ,it was going with her and that actually 12 inches of my property was technically hers,(definitely not a good way to start out on the good foot with me) and one day while trimming her jasmine vines off of my trees as it had grown and tendrilled across the fence, she came out and had to inform me that I had better get up all the trimmings and that this was how I should trim them etc. ..
then the other neighbor complains to me about how the rain washes the lawn and leaves debris trails and how the lawn folks surely can get that up(her land slants downwards, it's not the lawn folks doings,a natural occurence) but there is nearly always something for her to complain about,(she's a very, very odd bird let me tell you!) and how she was angry because the county now allows golf carts in our neighborhoods and she was going to call and complain..yada, yada, yada, you get the picture..these two women would I know for sure make things a bit of a challenge for me. I'll wait until I have land somewhere(I can be patient)...and in the meantime create my little oasises in the city. I have several bird feeders in my yard, and have created a cottage garden area, so I do have quietness in the city that looks like a country retreat..just no critters except the ones that fly into the yard.:0) which hey..that's o.k. I am learning to enjoy what I am able to have..and that's the farmgirl spirit too.:0)
All things will work out..in time.
I'm learning patience..and one day I'll have critters and a bit more land, etc. All in due time.
I do grow lots of flowers in my yard and intend to start alot from seed in a few more days.
I am also going to try growing some veggies this year in pots, as the soil here, near the water is vey sandy and almost always has to have amendments in the soil(think beach sand mixed with clay...uggh..some things grow, but growing veggies in it is a real challenge) So, I will try a few potted veggies this year too.
Oh, and for those of you that like my photos..thanks so very much! That really means alot to me.It's something I absolutely enjoy /love doing.
Thanks gals! Love all of ya'll. ~Tina

Posted - Dec 28 2006 : 08:19:01 AM oooo and with rabbits, you can spin!!! Tina, even though you *think* the two neighbors would object, does it really hurt to ask? You never know, you know? they just might not have a problem just so long as you keep your chickens cooped and they don't run free, kwim?

Posted - Dec 28 2006 : 07:30:08 AM But you could have a few rabbits! There is likely a limit on the number you can keep - but rabbits are quiet and a small number are non-smelly. Your neighbors would not even know it. :^) I have a friend who keeps 5-6 angoras in an exclusive neighborhood in a Cleveland suburb. She has a garden surrounded with bamboo matting covered with flowering vines, with an arbor for a gate. The rabbits are caged inside. The bamboo shelters them from sun, wind and rain, and also the occasional dog or cat. She uses the droppings for fertilizer, and the bunnies get all the veggie trimmings. She grooms the buns in the garden, and uses the mats and short fibers for mulch. Lisa at Somerhill www.somerhillfarm.com |

Posted - Dec 28 2006 : 07:17:54 AM Hi Tina. You know that you don't need to live out in the country to have a farm. Like you said you can grow floweres even have your own vegetable garden. You can grow vegetables in every kind of container. I like to plant things in old pots, old boots, a wheelbarrel turned on it's side. When things start coming in you can freeze them or can them for the winter. I'm going to look up the web sites you talked about. Can't wait to see your pictures. Laura 3 barrels,2 hearts,1 passion |

aw it's o.k. it's just a friendly reminder that if you are in the "big city" check with county ordinances to see if having that little backyard flock is actually legal.:0)

Posted - Dec 27 2006 : 12:19:08 PM Sorry to hear about your troubles. Maybe one day you can have a place where you can have all kinds of farm animals. I also have some picky neighbors. Had one that gave me some trouble about my goats then his dog killed my reg. boer billy and after he found out about the livestock laws , well, he won't be bothering me anymore. |
