Posted - Mar 01 2010 : 06:01:33 AM I'm going to copy my post from the other "swapping issues" thread...
I am a moderator on another forum that used to have swaps, but, eventually disallowed them. I also am active on a forum that still allows swaps. In my experience, these have been good safeguards:
During the swap, there is a deadline for emails. (ie, once you get your swappee, you must send out an email within a week, etc.)
REQUIREMENT of delivery confirmation. How much is it. .70? Come on, that's alot cheaper than assembling/sending a new package.
Some swaps require a post count in order to participate
There is a "Bad Swappers" list, which, if you do not fill your end of the bargain, you are added to, and cannot participate in any more swaps.
Many times you have to "agree" per PM to the list of rules the swap organizer has put in place for the swap.
Sometimes there are "brackets" in the swapping. a $10 bracket, a $25 bracket, etc. etc.
Some have even gone so far as implementing a "grandfathering in" approach. Someone else must vouch for having a good experience with you as a swappee before you're allowed to participate.
These few things have been helpful. But, if worse comes to worse, we've even had a lady go to the police on a "swaplifter." It was a traveling box, but, in the end the items were retrieved.
These few things have helped from what my experience has been, but, there's never a 100% guarantee, unfortunately. :(

Posted - Feb 28 2010 : 3:04:38 PM I'm with you Jennifer. I am new and have signed up for a couple of swaps. I am going to follow through, and have to admit, I would be pretty disappointed, too, if I was forgotten.

Posted - Feb 28 2010 : 08:28:43 AM I agree with Tina about reminders. I think sending a couple of reminders isn't too pushy. I think I'm pretty good at keeping track of what's going on but when times are stressful for me (like now!!) I know my head isn't always in the game.

Posted - Feb 28 2010 : 07:38:24 AM i have been swapping /bartering for 4 years.it is a blast, but i think a reminder sent out is a wonderful thing.i sometimes let things in life get my brain scrambled and do forget,so i would appreciate a reminder if i forget.you have to take the good with the bad.this year was all up in the air for me since Oct.so i know i had to back out of 3 swaps when my gb almost died.i felt so bad but knew i could not fulfill my end of the bargin.for bartering i always make sure i send out because that just is not fair.if you recieve a barter and do not send out you should at the very least send that persons' things back to them.if you keep it that is stealing in my book.i have two barters going right now,i will fulfill.all of the barters i have been in at this forum have been good.i consider myself blessed.you girls are awesome.if you are due a barter talk to that person and communicate,if they can not fulfill there end then you should ask for your stuff back, afterall it is yours.

Posted - Feb 28 2010 : 06:48:25 AM It's natural for someone to be busy, and forget...but I think when several months go by it's hopeless. Even when they tell you 3 times "it's going in the mail tomorrow". If someone changes their mind, and neither person has sent anything, ok no problem. honesty would be a good thing. I see no point in not saying your going to do something if you intend not too. I must say that 99% of my experiences have been wonderful and I would do it again. I think us farmgirls are awesome! For myself, I keep a folder, just for the barters I am doing, with names, emails, dates things were shipped etc- so I dont (heaven forbid) forget someone. I would feel awful if I forgot anyone. Posted - Feb 28 2010 : 06:23:49 AM I am feeling your pain ladies, but I am not giving up yet. I too love to make hand made items and to give them away. The fun for me is to see the work of others. I GREATLY appreciate the time, effort and thought that haas been put into something; therfore, I try to do the same in return. I wonder if when a new swap is started, if it could be limited to woman who have previously swaped and followed through. I guess the solice of the situation is they have to live knowing that they have cheated another person. If someones life is lacking to the degree that they have to cheat another then they are welcome to the item... I just wish I could get my postage money back.LOL.
Oh happy day! |

Posted - Feb 27 2010 : 11:59:57 PM I just started here and have signed up for two exchanges, I do hope that I don't get "burned" as I am very excited about doing a swap. And just getting to chat with others that have the same "Farm girl" ideals that I have. Along with that it the thought that Farmgirls keep their word, and agreement to participate in a swap is their word. I do hope that I can count on others as they can count on me.

Posted - Feb 27 2010 : 7:37:45 PM I've had some wonderful swaps and they are really fun to do. Just love making things and giving them away. Earlier this month I did a card swap and had gotten burned with a couple of gals who said that they would swap. one even e-mailed me again for my addy that they lost. But nothing has happened. These were homemade cards so I just wonder if the ladies didn't like them so no response. Needless to say I'm holding off for awhile. I know that things happen and I except that. What I don't understand is why one doesn't do what they say or to even respond to you or your posts. Just venting and feeling alittle bummed right know. Hugs, Laurie

Posted - Feb 27 2010 : 6:55:25 PM I know that life gets in the way and people forget, but is there any correlation between how new the members are and their frequency of forgetting? I only ask because a few years back I was part of another forum and you had to be a member for two months and have a certain amount of posts to be able to participate in any of the swaps. I know that I haven't been here too terribly long - I was surprised to see I could jump in and join the fun so quickly! I would never intentionally burn someone on a swap, but I also know how easy it could to be brand new to a site and want to jump in right away, get overwhelmed...and then not be able to fulfill, maybe because you aren't quite sure what you're getting into, or thought it would be something you liked and then realized it wasn't. Just my two cents!

Posted - Feb 27 2010 : 5:33:56 PM I am fairly new with this forum and swaps and I must say that I have had good experiences and bad. I must admit that I have decided not to do anymore. I got a lovely bag from Claudia that my daughter keeps running off with. But, some of the things I have received were late or they did not arrive at all etc. I won't be doing any more swaps. I was really excited about them at first but not anymore.

Posted - Feb 26 2010 : 12:53:29 PM it would be great that if someone says they will barter, that they actually follow through. It can be uncomfortble having to repeatedly email someone to inquire, and then when they say yes, they still dont. I dont get that, but whatever. Connie

Claudia, I have to admit I have never been burned on a swap or barter. I have heard other that have. I have been very fortunate to have gotten some really wonderful partners out there. So don't give up they are there. I can say I learned to be very patient. There have been a few times that I did not get my return swap until the last day or several days after the mail by date but things do happen. And I can say there have been a couple of times that I was very thankful for the understanding of a couple of ladies I bartered with cause I had to put other things ahead of the return barter. But it has worked out for me so far. The key is if you do have to be delayed to let your swap buddy know, keep them informed. I'm always up for a good barter so let me know if you got anything you're wanting to barter off. I make some wonderful lip balm, home made soaps, many different sewing items, garden decor...the list goes on. I do understand the need to vent sometimes.

Posted - Nov 08 2009 : 2:40:02 PM so far I've had all good experiences. with all the bartering i've done, without documenting it on paper, i'm sure i would of forgot someone- i agree that a friendly reminder is certainly ok.
shame on the ones that take advantage, though i'm sure they are few and far between. Connie

Posted - Nov 07 2009 : 6:40:39 PM I have been terribly late with a barter to Sheila. I am getting it out tomorrow. I know life happens and in my case this week it was a pinched nerve in my neck followed by pc troubles. We got a new pc and our internet provider scrambled our modem by messing with the programming. Then we had a death in my family.
I have been very lucky on most barters. I have only gotten burned on one. |

Posted - Nov 07 2009 : 6:28:52 PM all in all I have had wonderful experiences in bartering---but have also been burned. BUT I would rather be burned then burn someone. Anyone out there who I have forgotten, please tell me . Before I die of embarassment I will fulfill my end of the barter.
