Posted - Jan 09 2013 : 11:05:23 AM I am looking to build a greenhouse and debating on whether or not to buy a kit and which material I should cover it in: a polycarbonate or a material called solexx. We have a 95 acre farm, about 2 acres in veggies, 7 beef cows, and some chickens. We are pretty new to farming but it seems like a greenhouse would be great for planting starts and extending our seasons....we live in Tennessee.I think about an 8 x 12 would be plenty big for now. Any suggestions? |

Posted - Jan 10 2013 : 1:58:25 PM It retains heat as the addition was insulated(floor, walls and ceiling)as it was a add on to the living room. That is why it's shape in a rectangle. I have a thermometer in there where I can see the temp. form the battery operated reader in the house. When it's really cold usually light a fire in the morning and again at night. I love in when it's cold and snowing to go in there where it's cozy and enjoy the plants. Yup 25 outside and 80 in. I guess I have always tried to make things from other peoples junk. Like laying boxes from and old dresser. When I made Barbie doll clothes I would buy clothes from the Goodwill for the material as the material from stores was so expensive to buy just for doll clothes. Two of my chicken coops were my kids old playhouses. I guess that is why I like when MJF has things made from recycled items. |

Posted - Jan 10 2013 : 07:20:56 AM I have an old pickup bed made into a trailer with a fiberglass topper and I put baby goats and chickens in it with a lot of straw and it serves as sort of a little incubator. Annette your post reminded me of this. Do you keep the little wood stove going round the clock? Or does it retain heat through the night? Laura

Posted - Jan 09 2013 : 9:01:55 PM Mine was made from and addition from a trailer. It's long and narrow. My husband framed in the side that was attached to the trailer with old windows. This is on the south side. west side has the sliding glass doors and the north and east has a window. He put in a small wood stove to heat it in early spring months. You might find an old shed that could be re-purposed into one. For a quick one put some straw or old hay bales into a rectangle shape and lay old glass windows on top of them. Just remember to check them so it doesn't get to hot inside. |

Posted - Jan 09 2013 : 5:05:43 PM i received a kit type plastic one for mothers day last year; I hope to get more use of it this year. I know that it was purchased from a place called Harbor Freight try googling that. I do wish, someday, to make one of old glass panes though! |
