This is a great site...so glad I found it. I live in Central Vt via CO and CT. In the process of selling one place (house too big but not enough land) to buy another....I have gardening and old house experience but the farming part will be new to me...thinking chickens (my jack russell will love that) and a goat to start. I'm poor, single and work out of the house 30hrs a week...think it's possible? Any other solo farm girls out there? anyway looking forward to chatting with ya'll

Hi Mary Ann :-D
I visited Vermont twice, and loved it. My ex brother-inlaw had a cabin near Mount Snow, it was so rustic and so quiet. You've picked the right community to be a member of, I'm new here too but absolutely love it! :-D

Hugs..

Hi MaryAnn-

Welcome ot the forums! Are you going to milk the goat you want to get? They can be great animals to have on a farm- built in weed control and a great milk source. I love chickens, and wish I had some right now. Farm fresh eggs are so delicious and depending on your area- you might be able to make a few extra dollars by selling eggs off the farm!

I hope it is all going well for you!

Welcome, MaryAnn! Vermont is a gorgeous state, although I haven't been there some time! Good for you that you're getting a nice piece of land and farm on your own! That takes guts and a lot of spirit. I live in a townhouse that am more of the 'farmgirl' at heart type...and have neighbors that are right on top of each other. It can be a real pain at times, but at least I like the area I live in. Judy

Hi MaryAnn,
Welcome to the farmgirl forum. I love VT too. Good look with the coming changes. It sounds like you have a nice place now, but more land and less neighbors sounds really great. Not that I'm not neighborly, but I don't like them right on top of me. Keep the dream alive!!

If you get your goat (s) (can't have just one, they are herd animals) let me know. I keep a small dairy herd and really small meat herd.

Maryann. Your current home sounds wonderful...it would be very hard for me to leave there. We have 10 acres here.....approx 2 1/2 are pasture....and lawn for our home..the rest is forest/sugarwoods for tapping and wood to heat our home. I will stay on the lookout for homes/land for you.

Thanks for all the hellos and welcomes...

Doreen, not sure exactly where I will be moving just a smaller house with more acres. Right now I have a gorgeous ole 4 bedroom farmhouse with 1/2 acre but want a two bedroom at the most...a little cabin would be great ( youngest son graduates and moves out this year)...would like 15+ acres mix of pasture and woods. Right now I have a gorgeous mt view and I suspect I will be giving that up but I want solitude and to see my neighbors only when I choose to not when I look out my kitchen windows Also I have fantastic mature gardens and lovely rosebushes. One property I like ( it's a hike in from a main road) has nothing in the way of gardens it's mostly forest and will take years to develop but it is 17+ acres with a roaring brook going through it.That's in Roxbury/Northfield. Another property is a ole broken down farm with 35 acres (maybe too big) the house is a mess and it is in a kinda non-discript area of Vt with no view...it's a classic Vt farm. That one is in Ryegate. We'll see how quickly my current house sells...gotta do that first anyway. Right now I am painting and getting rid of clutter so I can show it...doing FSBO.

Welcome MaryAnn!! YOu will just love it here!! It is totally possible to have chickens and a goat in your position. I have been there. I will tell you that goats don't like to be alone (only goat I mean) and need a buddy. Nope...a chicken won't work. They are quieter and happier in pairs (herd animals) it can be done. I bet Vermont is just beautiful...a place I want to be sure to see some day!

It is *absolutely* possible!

One thing I quickly learned here on this site -- and you probably will too: *FARMGIRL* is a condition of the heart and mind. Once we farmgirls set our mind to it, we can learn to do anything. Once we have learned whatever we choose, our accomplishments will be bound only by our desire to perform. Do we wish to perform for fun, for hobby, for career? To serve ourselves, our families, others?

No matter what or why you choose a farmgirl lifestyle: Yeah...it's possible. Welcome - I hope you enjoy this group as much as I do!! ~ K

Welcome MaryAnn glad you joined the forum. Our Jack Russell, Sassy, didn't seem to bother the grown chickens too much but she was harsh on the babies. Again welcome. MB
