Posted - Jun 27 2007 : 7:18:26 PM Hello Farm Girls, I live in the middle of farming country, but unfortunately am a "townie." I have 12 year old boy/girl twins, and my son who desperately wants to live on a farm always asks me, "Why didn't you marry a farmer?" I actually did want to marry a farmer (or minister!), but fell in love with my husband, who works for a natural gas company. We met in the western mountains of Colorado, where I grew up, but he was a Nebraska boy through and through and wanted to return home.
I recently "retired" for the second time as a Family and Consumer Science teacher (home economics) to go back to stay-at-home motherhood. My husband and I crunched the numbers and we decided that I am actually more valuable to the family economically by staying at home and practicing what I call "black belt homemaking." We also wanted a better quality of life, which was also a deciding factor (less stress). I love teaching, but figure I can go back at a later date. I actually do more "farm" things than many of my friends who actually live on farms. I garden vegetables, can, sew, and cook almost completely from scratch. I obviously cannot raise livestock in the city limits, no matter how much my son begs.
For hobbies, I like to backpack in remote wilderness, read, scrapbook, embroider, and crosstitch.
I am looking forward to being a "Faux Farm Girl."
Happy Trails, Amy |

Posted - Jun 28 2007 : 1:22:47 PM Hello Amy and welcome to the group. Well..there "may" be a few things you could raise in the city..such as rabbits/angora ones for wool/spinning..and even ducks..I have a pair of Peking Ducks on my city property. You can also have only female bantams. Of course you'll need to check about city ordinance on a few of the things . But if they are for 4-H projects..you might could get a special clause for being able to have them in town.
