Posted - Jul 31 2007 : 6:02:45 PM Hi all! Thank you for letting me join your group and Thanks to Carol for your help getting on. My family and I have just this year bought 25 acres in the country and loveing it so much. I have been stuck in the city for too long and ready to get back to nature and doing things the way my grandmother used to. I know to them it would be a step back with the way things are now a days you can just run to the corner store for a loaf of bread but I want to try things on my own and really look forward to sharing and learning from all of you. I had my first large garden this year that I started all from seed and was very successful with it and starting to work on a similar one for fall. I have one son still at home and still young enough to be interested in learning right along with me. Thanks again everyone and I look forward to getting to know you all. |

Posted - Aug 05 2007 : 04:58:42 AM Smithville is a small town between La Grange and Bastrop. If you dont know Texas well you could say I was between Austin and Houston. If the grasshoppers are gone early enough I would like to have several varieties of squash and melons. I am not sure I would try tomoatoes and potatoes again thought because I had so many from spring.. I planted way too many plants. It wouldnt be a big deal if I had a way to store them but I am just now learning canning and I would be canning way into the winter..haha. I still have peppers making so I probably wont plant anymore of those. It seems the only leaves the grasshoppers DONT like. I am really not sure other than that. Since I have only recently moved here I am not sure what does well so I will just have to experiment. There is a spanish lady that lives near town that sells plants and flowers on the side of the road and I have been trying to watch and take note of what she has. There is also a farmers market in town on Thursdays that I like to go to and see what they have. Alot of them have greenhouses though. I would like to try to put some fruit trees in this fall. I have some wild plum seed I am going to try but not sure what others yet. Still alot of work to do to the place but will just have to do it a little at a time. |

Posted - Aug 03 2007 : 10:24:16 AM Where is Smithville? And what sort of things are you planning for your fall garden? My area (north central TX - near Waco) is great for growing melons, squash and pumpkins. I missed out on a summer garden but I'm hoping to plant a variety of winter squash and pumpkins this fall (as well as okra, cabbages, spinach and maybe try some winter beans. Plus the usual potatoes, turnips, beets and other root veggies.)

Posted - Aug 03 2007 : 10:17:57 AM Welcome aboard. This is such the right place for you. Seems like everyone here is getting back to the "old" ways of doing things and going more natural as well. It's a very eco-friendly place to be. I know about getting out of the city myself - was in Minneapolis and have retired to the Black Hills way out on top of a mountain ridge and wouldn't be anywhere else. I'll take the peace and quiet over the rat race and traffic any day!!! You'll love it here.
Peace and love. Annie |
