Posted - Aug 01 2007 : 4:08:59 PM I dont truly qualify as "new" as I have been reading farmgirl connection for a long long time....Until 3 weeks ago my committment to my full time job didnt allow me time (or energy) to actually contribute. Three weeks ago I left my full time job to pursue the "inner farm girl".....Having grown up on the farm, and married into a farming family.. she has never really left... but she certainly has taken a back seat for some time. Early on when my 2 oldest boys were young, I home schooled and enjoyed the farm girl ways........6 years ago when they entered High school I took on a full time job.. I must say, it has taken me 6 years to jump off the wheel and back to living my passion..... I feel I know so many of you on the site, having read the blog... and I am beyond thrilled to be "present"....I currently get to play farmer on the weekends as assistant director to our local farmers market, dabble in raw cheeses, and grow lavender and raisin grapes........My interrests are in soap making and raffia weaving.....I am forever amazed by the amount of creative and amazing things people do, and am deeply inspired by many many of the contributers to this site. |

Posted - Aug 02 2007 : 07:18:46 AM Carol Sue, Funny how the world isnt all that big, afterall. When Mt St Helens blew.. I was out pulling Rye in a wheat field in Grant County (I grew up in Coulee City Wa.)... we had so much ash dump down on us, we thought the world was ending.. not being around tv etc.. we had no clue what just happened.. we had the snow trucks scooping it up by the buckets full.... one lady in our town started making all kinds of pottery with the ash...:).... now at 44, looking back on my life.. it does seem like more peaceful times - even with the mountain blowing :)Nice tyo meet you!

Posted - Aug 01 2007 : 10:15:09 PM Instead of lurking, how about a "lookie lou". I am so glad you are jumping in and have the time to do it. Sherri, another cool connection. Let me explain, Rene. We were posting one night about Mt St Helen and where we were at at the time, we both lived in Centralia and my dad was the high school woodshop teacher. She was in his class. It was a riot to discover. Glad you are finding what works for you, those lightbulb moments tend to be important. When you figure those hats out you will have to post a picture. Carol Sue

Posted - Aug 01 2007 : 9:36:30 PM DeepSouthMamma,
I have 4 boys - my 20 year old is in the Marine Corp now - up until january he was a Junior at WSU studying engineering - and then enlisted.. go figure. My 19 year old is with the Coast Guard - rescue diver - I also have a 15 year old, and a 10 year old....I home schooled up until the oldest started high school.. and kinda caved into the family pressures that somehow I wasnt living up to my "full potential" and I became a Crop Insurance Agent.. My average weeks went from being home full time to 60 plus hours a week work week on a slow week :). Last year I got involved with Ag tourism in our valley and also became assistant market manager for our farmers market, started attending AG tours and Washington tilth events.. what was ment to be an outlet for me.. actually convinced me that the path I was on, was the wrong on for me... I felt that I needed to "stop the craziness, long enough to hear what I should be doing".. I am now feeling that I can do both.. find something where I am using my talents and skills and still be at home..
I admire your lifes choice and the committment.. I know how hard and how rewarding home educating can be... As soon as I get some hats to turn out, I will let you know.....( that is the perfectionist/administrator in me) :), until then, my Rene hat is OFF to you!!!!

Posted - Aug 01 2007 : 9:21:30 PM Thanks everyone for the warm welcome~ makes me wish I hadnt waited so long.
Alee, it is an interresting thought, for me, there just was something missing in my spirit. My mom was a career woman and was brilliant at what she did and I couldnt image her any other way.. for me, being home, in the garden, creating something new.. painting, cutting herbs, braiding and weaving and being around other very creative people who want to talk and learn more about the environment, and gardening and canning and bread making.. somehow feeds the soul for me.. So I guess I would pray that everyone follows the path that feeds thier spirit - and is true to who they are created to be, I think you are right, what a great world that would be...
Miksgirl - My hubby is Thomas - and he knows your Sam. We love the Mercer Family.. Matter of fact I have known Rachel's brother Pete for 25 plus years............it is a small world!
Thanks everyone!!!! It has been pure JOY to visit with you all, I look forward to the conversations to come....

Posted - Aug 01 2007 : 7:49:28 PM Rene - this is a small world! Sam told me that they had sold to Bolthouse. She was Rachel Mercer's college roommate - that's how she got a job over there. As your dh if he knows Sam (Samantha) Grubbs. She worked in the office and on the scale. She still goes over there all the time to visit Veronica and her family. |

It sounds like getting out of the Rat race is agreeing with you!
I wonder what our country would be like if everyone decided to step back from the Rat Race mentality. Kind of interesting to think about!
