Hi everyone,

I've been reading the chats for a few weeks, and decided to give it a whirl.

I'm from Ontario, Canada, and we live on a beef cattle farm. I've been married to a great guy for almost 20 years, and we have been blessed with three wonderful children, two boys aged 19 and 17, and a girl, 15. (And a black cat named Meadow). My husband is retired now, and I work part-time off the farm. I used to have laying hens, but had to give them up when I was hired for steady work 4 years ago. I still miss them. I love my job, but never seem to have enough time to do all the things I used to do when I was a stay-at-home mom.

I love to cook, sew and quilt, and just this year learned how to crochet, from my quilting friends. I belong to a group of quilters that makes quilts for fundraisers for our local library. I also take correspondence courses for my job, which takes up a lot of my free time.

I have both MaryJane's books, and all the magazines except the first one. Yesterday I took the plunge and ordered the 11" BakeOver skillet, Budget mix and Chillover powder. I can't find any of these in stores around here, so have to cross-border shop (which can get expensive with shipping and duty).

Well, that's my ramble. Going to try making apple butter (for the first time)this weekend, had lots of free apples given to me yesterday!

I can only check computer when I'm in town, so I may not be as active as others, but will try.

Hi everyone,

I'm happy to report, the apple butter turned out pretty good, in my opinion! It's my first try, and never having tasted it before, I have no prior experience, either.

I used this recipe from the Internet: http://www.recipezaar.com/11492

I started it Friday night in the slow cooker, had all the apples peeled and cut up by 9 p.m. (thank goodness for a daughter to help!). Then we put it on low to simmer for 18 hours with apple cider vinegar, then added the rest of the ingredients (I used 1 cup less sugar, like the comments suggested on the recipe) and it had to simmer for another 4 hours. I found it pretty watery around supper time, so I turned it up on high and offset the lid to help evaporate some of the liquid. I also used the electric mixer in it (after 18 hours)to blend it smooth (bit of a mess doing that!)

Anyway, by 10 p.m. I was putting it into jars. It looks lovely and dark, reminds me of date square filling...maybe I'll substitute some for filling and make apple squares!

So, now you know how I spend my exciting Saturday nights........

Hi, Lori! Welcome from one of the Louisiana farmgirls. I used to have chickens, too, but I ended up losing them to predators. I just told my dh yesterday that I wanted my new coop built, because I really miss my birds! Let me know how your apple butter turns out! That's one of my favorites. I've made it in the past, but haven't gotten any apples lately. It's also part of the reason I planted three apple trees at our farm! Looking forward to hearing more about you!

Welcome, Lori,

It's great to see all of these Canadian farmgirls coming online...I was born in Vancouver, BC and summered in the northern woods (due north of Parry Sound) my whole childhood and early adulthood, still get up to the family cabin when I can. My dad has friends up there who call themselves The Brechin Gang so they are probably from your town! Anyway, glad to have you here at the Farmgirl Connection!

Welcome Lori.....I am in Nova Scotia now, but came from (many years ago) Niagara, Fort Erie, Oshawa areas. I moved to NB as a teen and a couple of years ago, we were flooded out of our home on the Saint John River. God really does work in mysterious ways, as the farm that we moved to is truly where my heart is and will stay. When I do get to travel back to Ontario, I usually go right through that area, from sisters to mothers just outside of North Bay....Field,,,LOL,,,no population sign there either.
Drop me a line sometime....and you will LOVE LOVE LOVE it here...

What a warm welcome from everyone! Thank you so much.

Brechin is a small town (no population sign) on the east side of Lake Simcoe, in Central Ontario. We are southeast of Georgian Bay, which is part of Lake Huron.

It is beautiful country, still has lots of farms, and there are lots of rock quarries here, too. Many gravel trucks on the roads, (and stones from them hitting your vehicle, too.)

We are currently in the process of shipping our cattle (stocker steers)to market (some were auctioned yesterday), and then we will get new yearlings from Saskatchewan in a few weeks, and start all over again!

We lived in a city subdivision for 9 years, then moved to the country in 1997, and it was the best thing we ever did. Don't miss the rat race at all!

Welcome Lori, my husband is from Hull, Quebec, where the river separates Quebec and Ontario, in the Ottawa area. We are currently in Kuwait but will retire in Canada in a few years. It would be great fun to meet sometimes. I do lots of quilting too. Please tell us more, especially about your farm and the area you are in. This forum is a great place to be, all fun and creative ladies with big hearts.
