hi! i lived in austin for a year - a perfect place for a farmgirl, i think. i lived in the hill country near lake travis. u'd be close enough to austin to enjoy civilization but then you have tons of space too. i've only been to ny once, so i don't know how it compares, but austin can sure get hot in the summer (and it's humid too.) but besides that, austin is great, people are very friendly and their whole foods on the corner of 6th is amazing! there's also central market which is fabulous. :)

Welcome, Nicci! In and around Austin, you probably can find a farm. I'm from Northwest Louisiana, but a friend of mine lives south of Austin in San Marcos. There is land available, but I agree with Erin -- the Hill Country is beautiful! Good luck, and keep us posted!

I know that within an hour of Austin there are lots of places to live out in the country. I am sure you can find something closer as well.

Austin itself is a fairly decent sized city (since it is the state capital and the home of a HUGE HUGE university.) But check out east of Austin - Lexington, Cameron, Temple... and Northwest of Texas is the Hill Country. If you want goats or sheep, you will be in heaven in Hill Country! That is where some of the largest herds in TX are located.

I guess it all depends on how far your husband wants to drive to get into Austin. NOTE: Austin is probably the most progressive place in Texas and he may be able to do some telecommuting or long distance work from home part of the week. But that may be something to inquire about AFTER he has been there a while.

As far as your interests go, you will fit right in with the folks in Austin - it's a hip, happening town (a music mecca) and the majority of the "green folks" can be found living around Austin.
