Hi Farmgirls! I feel like I know many of you already. I have enjoyed learning so much. I have been reading for some time now. I am sure I will continue to try an absorb all of the wisdom you share while in the shopping stages of buying our first farm.

I live in the Memphis area now. I long for a place that I can have chickens and goats and a large garden. I am diving into making soap and many other crafty adventures; especially since falling in love with MJ's book. I can't wait for the workbooks.

Welcome to the forum Ivy! We look forward to hearing from you...you'll love all the conversation. Glad you love MJ's book, I have mine dog-eared and well-worn already. Can't wait for the next ones!

Welcome Ivy! KY/TN do seem to be the happening places around here! Never been to either, but I'm sure it won't be long till I visit since there are so many awesome gals in the area! I've also never made soap but it's something I'd like to try! Tell me how it goes! Good luck finding your little piece of paradise! We'll be cheering you on!

Much love and happy holidays!

Hi Ivy - I live not too far from you and long for farmstyle life myself. I live in Southaven, MS just on the other side of the TN/MS state line, about 2 air miles from the airport. I've lived here since 1973 and have watched this town explode much like Bartlett has. Much success with the soap making, I've never tried that one. Merry Christmas! Terry

Ivy: It sure seems that TN/KY is the happenin' place. I'm happy to see so many Farmgirls are there. It would be fun to get together with y'all next time I'm in the area.
Frannie: I think you could teach yourself to make soap. I did. I bought a couple of books and read them (though now days there's more than a ton of information on the web for free). I purchased the ingredients and supplies and went to it. My first bar of soap probably cost $100 but that's way cheaper than $1000, although probably not quite as much fun. I would LOVE to teach you how to make soap but I'm not likely to get back to KY for about a year.

Ivy .. come visit Cabin Creek sometime .. and i'll put out that big cauldron and we can make soap. actually, i was going to go to the John Campbell Folk Art Camp in North Carolina this year to learn to 'make soap' .. mentioned it to a girlfriend in town who makes wonderful soaps .. only she hasn't made any lately! Laughed and told her "guess what i'm gonna' do .. i'm going to pay a thousand dollars to learn to make a bar of soap!" she just slapped me upside the head and said "NO .. you are NOT!" I'll teach you to make soap! Well, i skipped camp but miss Dottie and i haven't gotten together yet to make it! (she has a daughter named Ivy too!) perhaps if you come down sometime next spring/summer, i can convince dottie to come teach us! And yes, ma'am it does cost about a thousand dollars after you figure in travel, tuition, room and board! OUCH! xo, frannie

Lisa, We have planned on camping near McMinnville but haven't made it yet. I have been to Cookeville though. There is some beautiful land there. Your are still many hours away from my current home. Congrats on your new place it is so charming.

Ivy, Sparta is close to McMinnville, although I haven't been there yet. I am 14 miles south of Cookeville, if you know where that is.
