Posted - Jan 03 2006 : 2:33:38 PM Hi, I'm Judy Gorton. I recently purchased this small acreage outside of Duncan on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. I share my home with my developmentally delayed brother, Gary. We live with llamas, alpacas, cats, chickens and our dog Jasper. I paint, sculpt and write and have started a business using the fibre from my herd. This looks like an interesting site! I like the concept.

Posted - Jan 04 2006 : 4:35:29 PM Hi Judy, Welcome to the forum! I'm located in Lethbridge Alberta, but drove thru Duncan last summer, after spending some time in Nanaimo. We also spent a bit of time sightseeing and hiking thru Cathedral Forest, too. What natural beauty! Hope to hear from you soon!

Posted - Jan 04 2006 : 07:35:36 AM Well, what a lovely welcome! It's so nice to meet a bunch of women who are into farming. We grew up on a farm in Ontario and then life being life that all changed in my teens. I have spent most of my life trying to get back to this lifestyle. Finally, I am getting there.
This morning, I woke at 5am, of course I couldn't go back to sleep even though I told myself I should. So what I do these days when I should be sleeping is 'ponder' where I should put fencing, training paddocks, gardens etc. I do not let myself 'worry'. This is a recent break through for me as I suffer insomnia and I find that if I only lay there and think about positive stuff I'm a bit more relaxed even if I'm not sleeping!
Today I'm off to pick up a small alpaca sweater that a friend has knitted for my granddaughter. Then home to rake poo......hahaha
Have a good day everyone!

Posted - Jan 03 2006 : 7:08:40 PM Judy- It sounds like you and Gary have a wonderful life in BC with your flock. I live in Eastern Washington and have many fond memories of trips to BC, particularly one where we drove from Seattle to Whistler along the sound, I have not been to your island but that area is so beautiful. I loved seeing the whales between the little islands so green and lush next to the deep blue water. I am glad you found these farmgirls! I have met so many 'soul- sisters' through these forums and I get so much help on my little projects. Do you handspin your fibers? I love to knit and I am learning to use a drop spindle (with varying results!) Blessings, Rebekka |
