Posted - Jun 26 2009 : 7:09:00 PM Well, after cruising around here for a few days and reading all of the wonderful sharing, I decided that I HAD to be part of this amazing group of women. My husband and I and our 2 teenage girls live on a little less than 2 acres and thanks to our involvement with 4-H, have a "mini-farm" with chickens, rabbits, pigs, dogs, and a cat. Who knew it would be so much fun reviving the skills (gardening, canning, sewing, etc)of my grandma? Looking forward to many exciting and interesting exchanges with the other farm girls!

Posted - Jul 14 2009 : 11:05:58 AM So good to see other farmgirls in Montana! I have been looking around on here since making the bread with the starter, and haven't yet seen everything! But, it's great to talk to and get ideas from other people. I had to throw my starter away, because it had black around the rim, and was separating, and also my husband had put the A/C in the kitchen, so was going to be too cold in there. I will start it again in the fall, though. Now I'm just looking for chicken ideas, as we have just started raising chickens(and 4 turkeys and 2 ducks!).

Posted - Jun 29 2009 : 10:25:02 PM Well, the Farmer's Almanac says it's supposed to be an unseasonably cool/wet summer, so fingers crossed! I love the Bitterroot...it's such a pretty valley. We've gone down the last couple of years for the State 4-H Horse Show.

Posted - Jun 29 2009 : 9:56:56 PM Welcome Kelly,
I am in Corvallis, Mt. in the Bitterroot. I find it addicting too, but luckily my toddler keeps me from sitting here all day.
Here is hoping we have no forest fires this summer...

Posted - Jun 29 2009 : 6:01:35 PM Yeah, we like it here. We know a couple of folks that worked at Meadowgold, but left awhile ago. Thankfully your husband has a job, but bummer having to be so far from here. South of Kila...that's some pretty country. My family is in that area as I write...they're gathering one of many loads of firewood for the winter.

Posted - Jun 29 2009 : 5:57:35 PM Kelly, I just moved from Kalispell last June. My husband was working at the Meadow Gold Dairy and after it close was transferred down to the Billings plant. We still have our 5 acre lot just south of Kila. Yes I have been to the Polebridge parade many times and it is a real hoot. We will also be staying at our friends cabin up the North Fork on Trail Creek. It is about 6 miles south of the border. Have fun on the fourth with your family. I might be moving back up there in about 4 years from now. My husband will be able to take an early retirement at 53 with full benefits. Yeah.... How I miss that area.

Posted - Jun 29 2009 : 2:34:17 PM Hi Karin, I'm in Kalispell...actually a little ways south and west of Kalispell. You've had some great sounding adventures. My bachelors degree is in wildlife biology, so my path crossed a lot of Forest Service and Park Service folks. I've been teaching science now for 20 years, so those agency contacts have come in very handy!
I remember book mobiles! I went to a one-room country school when I was in grade school, and that's how we got library books! Do you get up as far north as Priest River?

Posted - Jun 29 2009 : 2:12:30 PM Kelly, the last year I worked for the Forest Service was in 1984. After that I was a Smoky Bear hat wearing Park Ranger at various parks around the country (in MT, VA, SD, ID, and AZ), I gave all that up when I married my Canadian husband. We lived in the Yukon the first summer we were married, then in Kimberley, BC. I'm a Spokane native and we moved here in 1991. When my now ex got tired of being married (1991), I was thrown back into the workforce and this time tried library work. I LOVE it and now drive a 36 foot long bookmobile in northern Idaho. I just wish it paid a liveable wage or was at least fulltime.
Are you in Kalispell, Whitefish, Columbia Falls... ???
It's GREAT to have you here! Karin |

Posted - Jun 29 2009 : 10:44:15 AM Hi Cindy, What kinds of projects are your kids involved in? My two girls are so diverse, the only thing they have in common is raising hogs.

Posted - Jun 27 2009 : 8:44:05 PM Hi Karin, Yes, my husband and I are both native Montanan's. His family homesteaded here in the Flathead Valley and my great grandparent immigrated from Germany to eastern Montana. You drove right by if you went through Kalispell LOL. Do you still work for the Forest Service?

Hi, Kelly! I'm in Washington State, right next to the Idaho border (I work in northern Idaho). Just last week my dd and I were in your neck of the woods. We were in Libby, Kalispell, the Bison Range, Missoula, and Garnet (a ghost town). YEARS ago, 1977, I worked for the Forest Service in Eureka and have been through Glacier many times, so know the area where you live. Really beautiful. Are you a native Montanan?
Welcome! Karin =) |

Posted - Jun 27 2009 : 11:33:09 AM I would LOVE to go to the celebration over the 4th! Unfortunately the timing just isn't going to work this year. Each July a bunch of cousins meet at Priest Lake, ID and spend a fabulous week relaxing, catching up, and enjoying each other's company. We come from CT, Chicago, TX, CA, WA, MT, and ID...there are about 30 of us all told. I plan and cook the meals for our 2 cabins for the week, so I'll be up to my ears in planning about the time the 4th rolls around. Maybe next year.
Alee...yeah, I'm a ways from Laurel. I think I'm closer to Seattle than I am to you! LOL

Posted - Jun 27 2009 : 08:16:35 AM Madelynne, the 4th of July celebration in Polebridge is a hoot! Have you been before? For a tiny little remote mountain town that only gets mail twice a week, the 4th of July at least quadrubples the population. It's been awhile since we've ventured up there....have a great time!
