Posted - Aug 18 2009 : 05:28:19 AM Hello everyone, my name is Jane and I live 30 minutes outside of Pittsburgh Pa. I took over the family farm 10 years ago because most of the family had died. I have 75 acres mixed use with crops and pasture, board horses and cows, guinea hens, and an old dog. I would love to add more, but the Husband is a city guy and takes quite a bit of coaxing before he see the benifit of another animal (he still doesn't see what is good about the guinea). I have been a strict vegetarian since I was about four and I had made the connection that my pet cows were then on the table. Imagine how my beef raising parent took that. But I am headstrong. Most of the Farmer neighbors think I am nuts, but I am able to keep the farm operating as a farm doing as little harm as possible. I run the farm myself since the Husband owns a business in the city. So I am soooo glad to be here with other women who I have something in common with. I just dont have that where i live, all the farmers in the area are in the 'old boys club'. Can't wait to chat with everyone. |

Posted - Aug 19 2009 : 1:55:33 PM Welcome Jane. Do you need more guineas? I'd be happy to send you18 of them if I could catch the silly things. They are really more aggravating than they are worth. I agree with your hubby on this one. I have one, the only white one, that I call Dumb White Guinea. And he is. We had 16 keats hatch a few months ago and we're down to 10 now. So maybe we'll end up with just the 8 adults soon.
Anyway, have fun here. Kris

Posted - Aug 18 2009 : 07:27:44 AM I used to walk my dogs behind the old guys house and he had two then. They would just run to the back fence and 'give us down the road' as my granny used to say. Just fuss and yell at the big dogs until(as they thought), we had been chased away from their territory! LOL!

Posted - Aug 18 2009 : 07:10:38 AM Thanks for all the welcomes. Janice, I got the guinea to help with the bugs. Well I think I have spoiled them because they would rather have feed than scavage for bugs. But they are very easy to care for because they still have thier wild instincts(except mine) and are quite hardy. They can be trained to free range and come home to the coop at night and they are not as nasty to one and other as chickens can be. Plus they are so ugly they are cute and quite funny. I would recomend them. My Dh thinks they just eat and poop alot. |

Posted - Aug 18 2009 : 06:16:46 AM Hi, Jane. Welcome. Tell me about the guinea. I live in a city now(Louisville, KY), but will be moving to our 23 acres in Irvington, KY, next June. An elderly man here in town has a guinea hen in his backyard. It gets out a lot(last Sat., my dh and I sort of 'herded' it from a Speedway parking lot down the alley to his yard.). I'd love to have some when we move. Are they hard to care for?
