Good Morning! I am very excited to be here!I live on a 10 1/2 acre piece of land that I grow a small garden and often a couple pigs or a calf. I cannot sew a bit but love the work of others. I love to garden and preserve my harvest in various ways. I work with High School Alternative Education students in a small town in Michigan. We have what is called an experiential program that fosters a variety of hands on learning opportunities. We have been granted permission to utilize 120 acre plot of school owned land to create an outdoor learning site .We hope to create and protect a portion of this land into an area suitable to grow our own organic garden on school grounds. Our students will learn about waste reduction, composting, causes and consequences of habitat loss, water and energy conservation, hazards of chemical use, preparing and preserving healthy foods from healthy soil. This allows students and staff an exceptional chance to observe and also give something back to the environment we share.
This is a unique opportunity for our students, My request to you is for information on possible funding sites and of course any creative ideas to enhance this experience! Is there a forum that I could join that would possibly help with input for this kind of plan? Our program has several young mothers. I would also like to educate them on healthy nutrition for themselves and their children.

Hi from Virginia, go to the bargain site there are 180 pages of things there. Also do not overlook your area of county and state funds for this kind of thing remember the (green) thing is big so go for it. What you guys are doing sounds like it should be mandentory for every one going to school so they would know how to do for themselves if need arises. The USA is funny in many ways we have groups to go to other countries to show them how to do, but the how to do that this country use to do is gone and needs to be tought back into it. Hey Rea! How are you and welcome. I'm a MI Farmgirl too! I work with students with IEPs here. I have a fair amount of kids in our alternative program as well on my caseload. Wow Rea, you've really taken on a big load. The best of luck to you. Sounds like "cajungal" gave you some great advice. My husband is an LPN at our county jail and they had their 1st BIG garden out back to teach good things to the inmates there and to give them something constructive to do with their time. I think it's great.He laughed and said that they had the straightest rows he'd ever seen AND not one weed.lol Sounds constructive to me! A big farmgirl welcome to you!

Welcome!!
What an amazing endeavor y'all are taking on with that program.
Check with your extension office. They'll be a good source of information on possible land development grants. They may even be able to join in and help.
Check with your county and city offices, they have money that is earmarked for land/educational grants. They love combinations like developoment and education. There's also benefits for being a minority (woman). It takes a little bit of looking but the money is there.
DO NOT pay money to anyone saying they will find grant money for you. It's a waste of money. What is worth the money is hiring a grant writer after you've found the grant(s) you want to apply for. It is possible to write one yourself but may take longer. Right now is a great time to apply because decisions are being made about money distributions. Even if you miss a deadline, you can file for next year.
If you google grants, it will produce tons of hits. You should really just research through the actual county and city official sites. If their site doesn't list the grants then the library will have a resource book that you can look through.
