Posted - Jan 26 2010 : 11:09:23 AM My husband and I are retired on five acres of land in the country. We enjoy our gardens during season and dream about them in the winter. The past few years I have wintersowed on our outside deck, and was able to get some great plants that were healthy to put right in the garden without hardening off. I will start wintersowing about the third week of February.
I enjoy going to auctions, estate and yard sales and farmers markets. I am looking forward to finding friends with some of you farmgirls.
One of my daughter's living out of state will be getting the Magazine and I know we will share ideas and thoughts from it. Wellswillow---Marcie

Posted - Feb 19 2010 : 07:52:39 AM Hi, Marcie. I'm in your neck of the woods as well, and I did some wintersowing for the first time last year. Used old milk jugs and juice bottles, and it worked very well. If only I had room in my yard for all the plants that sprouted! |

Posted - Feb 19 2010 : 05:38:53 AM Welcome from the sunny state of Florida. AAHHH how I dream of having property that I could retire on. I live on an acre outside city limits but there of course are limits of what we are allowed to have. I do have a hive of bee, that are wintering nice and "pet" chickens. Chickens are in a small playhouse and have a run attached . I look forward to getting a privacy around the backyard so they can roam some.
Nice to meet ya!

Posted - Jan 28 2010 : 09:43:26 AM Thanks Marcie, That's interesting! I've not heard of that. We've just always started seeds in March indoors, but if I can get a seed to be more cold-tolerant by starting it outdoors, that's Great! I love learning new stuff. Again...Thanks!!!

Posted - Jan 28 2010 : 05:59:18 AM Herblady, winter sowing can be done in almost any container that will hold 3 inches of soin and have grow room. I use the large icecream buckets and gallon milk jugs. The first thing to do is make a few holes in the bottom of your container for drainage. In the buckets you also have to make some holes in the top to allow rain or snow in a bit. I make about 5 petal shaped holes in the bucket tops. I just leave off the cap on the milk jugs. It is important to do hardy perennials first when you start planting. A couple weeks later, the semi-hardy seeds. A couple of weeks after that I do some flower seeds. The nice thing about this is you get very hardy starts that don't need any hardening off when it is time to plant. I always have some to share with friends. If you put wintersowing in your search engine, there are many articles out there that would help you. Marcie
