Posted - Feb 10 2010 : 12:28:47 PM Hello, my name is Lisa. My husband gave me a subscription to MaryJanes Farm magazine for Christmas. It is wonderful and fun! I have two children who are so excited about earning badges as Young Cultivators. After 13 years of living in Arizona I have returned to the farm in Ohio where I grew up. I have chickens, goats, and horses. Love the eggs and milk. I enjoy making goats milk soap and quilting. My goal for this year is a beautiful garden. I've had some sad looking gardens in the past. Blessings to all of you!!

Posted - Feb 24 2010 : 4:48:22 PM Well sounds like you have the farm life well under way. Far above me that is for sure I just buy goat soap and hand lotions I will not ever be in a way to make it but that does not stop me from being a Mary Jane Girl. Glad to have you and board. Posted - Feb 12 2010 : 6:22:56 PM Hi Lisa, Yes, goats can be very sneaky about fences... I tease my son(youngest just turned 11) I had to rename a couple of his Lamanchas to "I Humble Humans" and Extra Step" They are actually called Callie and Sunflower, but they have given me more challenges in keeping them in than all the other goats put together in 20 years!!!!! After kidding, he has agreed, since I have to work off farm more these days that I better find them new homes with jails!!! I find the Boer sometimes ignore hotwire more, I think they have more hair coat to insulate them? We are north east of Brason maybe about 4 hours?? When it comes with the quilting desire, my oldest stepdaughter lives in Oregon and is getting married in September and I want to make her something? I have always ordered the white spiral plastic tree guards when I have planted new trees to help protect them from critters as well as men with mowing machines. What kinds of trees are you planning??? Laurie Word from the dairy today, the first doe has kidded with 2 little does, I was there yesterday looking over the does and breeding data. I think there's a good chance we'll have about 35 or so kid between now and the end of the month!

Posted - Feb 12 2010 : 4:08:11 PM Hi Lisa, Welcome to you and thanks for your welcome and so look forward to what this new avenue for communicating and spring brings!!!! Here at our farm we now have Nubian, Saanen, and Lamacha goats, we have raised Kinders and Pygmies and once upon a time... At the dairy we have a mixture of Saanen, Alpine, Nubian, and Lamanchas, varied duties from all aspects of the herd, to dipping and salting cheese. I was in Arizona last spring for 2 days on goat business, such a contrast, the desert to here! Oh those cactus blooming were so beautiful!!! Goats that came from there had to adjust to what grass was! How are the garden plans? Did the fruit trees survive the goat pruning???? I hope oh I hope I have enough energy and focus to reclaim some of the wilds out there!!!! I have raised some champion ragweed, that at least the goats have enjoyed!!!! I have things I have to find , whole beds over run with grass. At least the pear tree I planted back in 91 is easy to find has been forgiving of my neglect and has given us bushels of pears these last few years!!!!! Looking forward to learning and sharing more!!! Laur Do you quilt a lot? I have been looking over some of the quilts on the internet for inspiration, my older granddaughter is now 5 and that is the last time I sewed!!!!! Boy do I have a lot of mending piled up:)!!!! Looking forward to sharing and learning from each other!!! Laur |

Posted - Feb 12 2010 : 2:36:13 PM Hi Lisa.Welcone from NE Ohio. We're starting to get a few Ohio gals on here. Yeaaaaa! I'm excited! I loved visiting Arizona every summer on our Vacations as a child. I always thought that I wanted to retire there until I went back in the late 90's and saw how built-up it was and how "green." That depressed me. Arizona is 'spose to be dry desert and it was green. That changed my mind. hahaha Guess I'll stay here! ;-) Enjoy this site. It's an unbelievable "Chapter of Knowledge!" I just love it!

Posted - Feb 12 2010 : 1:44:12 PM Delicia,
I was stationed at Fort Huachuca, Sierra Vista for a while and then I moved to Yuma, AZ. Lived and worked there for about 10 years. My husband and I loved traveling to Flagstaff and the White Mountain area. It was the only way to get to some cooler temperatures and a chance at seeing snow. Nice to meet you. Lisa

Posted - Feb 11 2010 : 12:05:33 PM Welcome DeEtte, your going to love the magazine!!
Hello Marjean, I use coconut oil, palm oil, olive oil, and almond oil in my goats milk soap. I freeze the milk so that it doesn't burn when I add the lye. I added lavender EO last summer to a batch. It sold really well at the local farmers market. I've never made a batch of unsented. Think its time I did. Thanks for the welcome. Lisa

Posted - Feb 11 2010 : 10:32:06 AM Welcome Lisa,
I hope to have a garden this year. There is somethings growing already. I didn't think we would be getting this kind of weather here so soon. But, oh well, they are surviving so far. What do you put in your soap? My daughter and I are going to start making our own and I love goats milk unscented soaps.
Hugs, Marjean

Posted - Feb 11 2010 : 09:23:54 AM Lisa from Georgetown,
I'm just a bit north of Marietta, OH near Highway 60 in the southeast part of Ohio. Not too far from you. My Nubian (Maddie) has a reputation on the farm for being one of the more stubborn animals that reside here. Great to hear from you.

Posted - Feb 11 2010 : 06:06:03 AM Lisa Welcome, you will love the girls here. Where is Waterford? Your name caught my eye, as I too am in the Ohio Valley, I live in between Georgetown & Ripley,(Brown County) about 4 miles from the river & about 50 miles east of Cincinnati. I have 2 goats(Nubians, Lucy & Lotty) & 17 chickens & 5 dogs that currently are driving me crazy. We have some other girls that are fairly close to me as well. Welcome! |

Posted - Feb 11 2010 : 04:24:30 AM Thanks for all the warm welcomes. This is just awesome!!
Hey Kristen, I have a Saanen and a Nubian. (Lacy and Maddie) They are due in April. I have some Boar goats that are due in about two weeks. We are so excited. This is my 3rd year for having goats. I don't milk through the cold winter months. I usually freeze our extra milk throughout the summer and fall and then I have enough until they kid again in the spring. Making soap is on my to do list. I use a lot of soap during the holidays as gifts. Last spring me and my children were at the goat barn when the kids were born. It was so much fun watching them play and grow. Thanks for the welcome and nice to meet you.
