I am a wife of 19 years to my dh and a SAHM and homeschooling mom of 4(18,12,8, and almost 1)We live in the country. We just moved into our home about 7 months ago. We live on an acre. We are looking forward to the temps warming up so we can plant some flowers and get some produce growing,too.My dh is thinking of putting in a horseshoe pit,too.Today it is 50 degrees and sunny. It was only 20 degrees when I got up this morning.
I enjoy cooking,baking(especially), cardmaking, paper crafts, cross-stitching,reading, country crafts and decorating.I have a sewing machine so I would like to do something crafty in that area and I would also like to learn crochet. I also sell Longaberger products although I am not focused on this too much.
Are there any farmgirl chapters up my way?

Hi Tina! Welcome from Nevada, but I was born an Alaska girl.
I was born in Anchorage and we lived in Wasilla. Most of my extended family still lives up there, mainly in Anchorage. We try to go every few years to visit with family. My family moved to NV when I was 6.
I remember tin foil on our windows in the summer so we could sleep, moose stealing veggies from the garden (my mom thought it was the neighbors until we actually saw the moose doing it), and plenty of great seafood! My uncle lived in Fairbanks for a long time, it's one of the only places in the state that gets warm enough to use the AC in your car. lol
If you can make it to the State Fair you will see veggies that blow your mind! I remember broccoli heads that you couldn't put your arms around! It's the long hours of daylight that kicks the plants into high gear.
We are working on planning a trip in August or so, it would be great to be able to meet up with you!

Thanks for the info Tina my dh and did a cruise in 1996 and he loved it so much that he said his dream would be to make the drive. Well we retired last year bought an rv and are setting out May 13 this year on the drive. Maybe we can run in to you. Lilly

My now ex-dh and I spent our "honeymoon" in the Yukon in 1989. He worked as a RN at the hospital in Whitehorse. He'd work eight days and have eight off and we took every single road in the Yukon (Dempster, Canol, Nahanni, etc.) except for the one that goes to Atlin, BC. We were there July through September and before we came back south we spent a week visiting Alaska. Fairbanks, Denali, Anchorage... We camped near Portage Lake one night and I sure wish we'd had more time to see that part of Alaska! Someday, in my dreams.....

The interior region is beautiful(as is most of the state from what I've seen so far).The mountains are just gorgeous. On the way to Denali park, you feel like you are engulfed by mountains and it is almost surreal. We get temps as low as -60 below zero in the winter along with 4 hours of daylight.We wear T-shirts in 40 degrees and long-sleeves(no coat)at 30 degrees. It is not as bitter as you may think because of low humidity. Then in the summer we have 22 hours of daylight and temps usually in the 60's-70's. It reaches 80 maybe a couple of times. Alaskans grow big and beautiful produce here because of all the sunlight. People are really into hiking, walking and biking here.
Things are a bit pricey. To get a decent single family home, your looking at about $180,000-250,000. If you want to rent a decent 3 bdr apartment, it is about 1000-2,000 a month. Most homes are heated using fuel oil and that is about $2.69 a gallon. At the grocery store, cheap bread is 2.49, milk is 2.99,dozen eggs over 2.00.Believe it or not, sometimes the store has organic fruits and veggies cheaper than the non-organic so that's a plus!
My dh and oldest ds like to hunt so we have lots of moose and caribou in our freezer. I prefer the caribou. We just had caribou burgers on the grill the other night when it was only 40 degrees!When the calendar says Spring, we don't mess around. I am hoping that they will get some salmon this year.I prefer fish over meat.
Gas for your vehicle is over 3.50 a gallon.It takes $70-75 for us to fill up from empty.
You might also be surprised to find out that we have alot of the big stores here,too like Wal-mart(biggest one anywhere, we don't shop there much though because of all the imports,prices and poor customer service), Lowes, Home Depot, Barnes and Noble and more.
Of all the places I've lived this is my absolute favorite.Even though we don't have family here, we still absolutely love it! If anyone has anymore questions, ask away and I'll try to answer.

I'd wish you a warm Southern California welcome, but it's drizzeling here this morning!
15 years ago my husband and I traveled through Alaska on the AlCan, and the a cruise up the inside passage 4 years ago. It is one of the most beautiful states, I think. We want to return someday and eat salmon in Tok again!
One thing that really impressed me, was the stacks and stacks of canning jars I saw in the grocery stores.

A big Wisconsin hay dare to ya Tina! We are so glad you joined us. My DH (that is dear husband) is going to be in Alaska for a couple of weeks in August with the Air Force. He can't wait to see the last frontier.

I don't know Tina, if we can let you get away such a small introduction. Alaska is one of those mysterious places that so intrigues me. Can you tell us more what the "Interior Region" of Alaska is like? I'm sure it's just like they picture on the cable shows like "Ice Roads".

A very big Welcome from Virginia. I have not seen any girls from Alaska but if you check around if there are any you will find them. However one does not need to be close to talk and to learn or teach. My dh and I are doing a cross country trip this summer starting May 13. From Virginia to PA, to Washington state on to Alaska before we head back home. We will be going to Fairbanks as well as the national parks. It is very possible to set up some time to meet and enjoy some time together. Lilly
