Hey everyone! I just joined and am very excited about meeting some great Farmgirls across the country. I live on a 5 acre farm with my husband and two year old son. We raise goats, chickens, guineas, and would like to have a cow. We also plant a big garden in the summer.
I am a registered nurse and a wannabe writer.  I'm especially interested in cooking (I'm vegetarian), discussing books, and natural health. I'm also always interested in tips on how to juggle being a homesteading mom with having a full-time job.

Welcome Lindsay. I'm a retired RX Tech and I grew up in the Herbal/Natural Healing world, so I know what you mean. I got so tired of the whole racket.It's all about insurance and drug company's anymore. Sad! Where's the compassion for people? It's all about $$$. Well THIS site that you stumbled upon will put a smile on your face and genuine happiness in your soul! These girls care about YOU and ME! It's wonderful. A GREAT BIG warm fuzzy!!! Enjoy!

If only they realized that making midwifery illegal just means more unassisted births. Not always a bad thing, but I particularly liked having my midwife to help me with the natural process my body was going through, even though she was late for the actual birth...the stinker! If she hadn't been there a few minutes afterward, I wouldn't have known what to do with the placenta that was just hanging out inside me LOL!
Well, good for you for being there for the crunchy mamas! Maybe someday your state will legalize midwifery. I love my midwife to pieces!

I'm constantly a square peg in a very round hole! I work in a special care nursery and am constantly dismayed at the way modern medicine has turned childbirth into an illness instead of a natural process. Most of my interest in homesteading and natural health has happened since I've been out of nursing school. In general, it's still a great, flexible job that allows me a good bit of time at home. And my colleagues tend to let me take care of the "earthy families". haha I try to encourage new moms to trust their own intuition and don't push things like vaccination or formula supplementation. It's the least I can do. I've thought about going to midwifery school, but it's not legal here in Alabama for midwives to deliver. Which is a whole other topic!

So, you're an RN who is interested in natural health. How does that work out for you? I've always had a desire to go into the medical field and was actually going to go to nursing school when I was 21, but it didn't work out and now I am a say at home mom to three kiddos. I have entertained the thought of maybe trying again when my kids are grown, but now I've learned so much about natural health and have a kind of disdain for modern medicine, so I don't know how I'd do working in an environment where I don't necessarily believe in it's values, know what I mean? Just curious if you ever feel like a square peg in a round hole or something.
