Hey all. My name is Crystal and I live in southern Indiana. A girlfriend from KY gave me a copy of MaryJane to read on my way home from her house, and I fell in love with the idea of Farmgirl Sisterhood.
My hub is a scout leader, musician, and union carpenter.
My oldest boy, Sunshine, is 10.
The baby boy, Acorn, is 5.
I play piano for two of our local Catholic churches. I also keep the financial records for our local library and another business. I run an underground literature magazine and have been writing and publishing for several years.
I'm 34, tattooed, a roller derby blocker,
barefoot, and an avid gardener, food preserver, and all around DIY type of gal.
I grew up on an 83 acre farm in western KY with three brothers. We also had a huge garden, and my dad and brothers hunted. I've been a vegetarian since I was 11.LOL
Hub and I enjoy working out in the gym, biking, hiking, and camping. We are hoping to participate in a class, locally, which shows edible forest foods in our area.
I enjoy making my own laundry soap (okay I don't enjoy it but it makes great conversation). I knit and sew fairly well. I make menstrual pads, cloth diapers, etc for my friends and myself.
My hub and I are turning our little 1/5 acre into a self sufficient haven. We've been working on it for a year, need about a couple of more for it to really work for us. I can proudly say that we are the first people in our town to till up the front yard and plant crop...although that caused a bit of a stink at first, people now drive by to take a look. We aren't allowed to keep goats or chickens in town, but since I'm vegan and he's not too much into eggs, we're doing alright.
I love challenging myself, and that's why I think Farmgirl is right for me.
I haven't bought a new item of clothing since 2008. I rework my clothes or buy secondhand. I haven't used shampoo on any of our heads since 2007. My friends like to say I'm great at depriving myself, but I never feel deprived at all...very blessed to have such a wonderful family and friends who can laugh me off and love me.
I hope to share my knowledge and learn TONS from you folks.

Crystal, I love your story about the mulberries! That is usually how life works, give someone, or in this case, something, a chance and you'll be surprised at the outcome!

I could care less about my lawn. I let whatever grow wherever it wants, but I have to admit me and Creeping Charlie had a knock-down-drag-out the other day over an area near the house that I want for my herb garden. I don't think I won, but I'm not ready yet to give up without a fight LOL!

I've always loved gardening. Even when I lived in Chicago, I spent as much time as I could in the park. It's so funny. When we first moved into our house, this little tree kept growing through the fence. I kept chopping it down because I was afraid it would ruin the fence. Then I became pregnant one summer and let it go. The next year it was too big for me to handle. Imagine my surprise when I walked out there my hub, a chainsaw and shovel, ready to get it out once and for all, and mulberries were everywhere. Needless to say, the fence lost and I now have three mulberry bushes.

A big Wisconsin hay dare to ya Crystal! We are so glad you joined us. We are slowly removing all of our grass and planting crops too! I think it is crazy how a lot of my neighbors spend so much time, money and chemicals on their lawns! I let mine go all natural. I love the wild violets, creeping charlie and dandelions and so do the bees! I have three big garden beds and more to come. I planted 4 apple and 1 cherry tree a couple of weeks ago. I also took out some ugly bushes at the back border and planted raspberry, blueberry and blackberry bushes. My DH wants to plant the side yard in wheat. I wonder what the neighbors will think of that. You sound like a farmgirl after my own heart, can't wait to get to know you better.

Thank you for all the warm welcomes.
I'll get out tomorrow and take some pics.
We have two gardens: one at my inlaws where we plant the big harvest crops like potatoes, green beans, and corn, and another in my front yard where we plant brussel sprouts, broccoli, tomatoes, things I use everyday.
This little guy is one of many huge worms in our garden.

Welcome from Ga. Crystal. It sounds like you have it all together there. ANd chickens would just get in all your gardens and make a mess. They do in mine. If not a chicken then it's a cat. Good for you for making your front yard a garden too.
