I got my offical sisterhood number this morning! I am so excited I can not tell you. Here's who I am:

I live in a very small town called Dahlonega, GA. It was one of the major cities in Georiga to have a gold rush back in the day! We have North Georgia Military College here and that's about it. I love small town life. I have always lived this way. When I was little I grew up on grandfather's farm. We grew chickens, since Georgia is the poultry capital of the world, and we had cows. We grew a very large garden every year and there was always something to do. My grandfather was in his 60's and got up every morning to do all this farm work. My brother and I pratically lived with them. My parents are great but they were starting their own business and we loved the farm so we had our own room at Grandma and Pop's house. :)

They passed away when I was 10 and 12. The farm closed and since then I have been striving to move back to the way of the land. I miss the animals so much. My husband and I decided last year to change our small 5 acres into a hobby farm. He's a paramedic and he wanted to go to a healthier way of life as well as a calmer one. He stopped being a paramedic when his mother passed way at 49. It was just to hard to see people sick all the time and think of his mother. I work at our family owned business and he works our hobby farm.

We have 5 dogs, 3 cats, a crapload of fish, and most importantly 3 girl goats. We love our goats more than any animal around. They seem to have a calming effect on us both. We have plans to breed our goat girls soon and add chickens to our collection. We are vegetarians and we only eat organic foods. I stumbled onto Mary Janes Magazine in our local Kroger last weekend and since have thought about nothing else.

Our home is already pretty much green. We went green last year. We make all our own laundry detergent, soaps, etc. We are growing a garden currrently and just last night got all the supplies to build a 20x30' greenhouse. That way we can have veggies we grew year round. :)

My husband is crazy excited about all thing energy wise. We don't use central heat and air. We bought and installed a wood burning stove for our heat and in the summer we use a principal called drafting to cool our house. We went from a $200-300.00 power bill to $60.00 a month power bill :) Super encouraging. We are still improving things daily and when we get information from all types of sources that we want to try. Most recently a solar hot water heater that uses a recycled hot water bladder in our soon to be build green house. Soposedly it will heat water better than convential hot water heaters. We'll see soon.

Anyway, we are young. I'm 29 and my husband is 30. We have no children and don't plan on it. We have 5 nephews and that's enough. We love kids but we love to send them home too. We like to travel and see the world. We want to make it a better place now and in the future.

That's who I am and what I am currently working on. I can't wait to talk to some of you in the forums!

Remember: "The greatest pleasure in life is doing what others say you can not do" :)

Welcome Kristen. Isn't this fun?! I am sort of your neighbor too. I'm in Eastanollee, which is near Toccoa. Good luck with your chickens. If you need any tips, I've been raising them for about 7 years, glad to help.
Hope to see you around the forum.

Hi Kristen,
My family was in your hometown a couple of years ago to take my daughter to a CSI camp they were having at the local college. I just loved it. We went looking for antiques and my favorite was the old bookstore on the end around the square. I bought a Tasha Tudor book from them. We stayed at a beautiful bed and breakfast hidden in the mountain. It was wonderful.
We are growing our garden for the first year and also hope to have our greenhouse built by the time cool weather comes. It sounds like you and your hubby have a wonderful life:)
Happy gardening,
Angelyn

Hey Kristen, glad you joined us. You'll fit right in for sure. How nice to go Green where ever you can. It's a great feeling isn't it? Sounds like you 2 have it figured out. I've not heard of "Drafting" to cool a house. What is that?

Hey Kristen! I live down in Gwinnett Co!

How lovely that you all have a farm!
I am a kitchen sink farmer - sprouts and herbs are all I can grow since I am surrounded by trees.

My sister lives in Dahlonega. I love it up there. I make monthly trips to the square to go antiquing with my sister. We should meet sometime.

Welcome to the Farmgirls!

Dana

Greetings Kristen! I too am a bit of a newbie. I fell into the sisterhood by shear accident while surfing the net about six weeks ago and feel like I have always been here. These forums have the most magnificent women on the planet. You sound like a treasure that belongs in this pot of gold!

My best to all,
