Posted - Sep 14 2010 : 10:20:47 AM Hello to all! So glad to be a part of this great community! I live on a farm with my husband and daughter. We raise cattle and corn and a mess of fun when given the chance! My parents were country kids who left for the big city to earn a living and I was raised in town. I guess being a farmgirl is a gene that can lie dormant for awhile, but eventually it comes out strong! I've been living on the farm for 8 years now and can't imagine ever leaving it. I love gardening, sewing and cooking and hope to get started soon on a chicken pen. I had hens a few years ago, but I didn't have a good place to house them and they ended up on plates instead of on the farm. If you all have any suggestions on hen house plans, I'll love to hear them. Thanks! Sherri |

Posted - Sep 29 2010 : 04:37:00 AM Hey Sherri, Where are you located... would love to try to get together and meet you if you have time... Right now I'm working on my Community service Merit badge. I'm volenteering at a spay/ neuter clinic for cats and dogs in Lebanon on my days off. But if you are close and would like to just meet for coffee somewhere that would be neat. Or any other Farmgirls in the area are welcome too. I'm new to this, but would really like to get under someones wing with my chapter if I could. So here is a call out to anyone close to Alexandria, TN! Have a great day! Linda Farmgirl #2116 |

Just a small town country girl, farmgirl, loggergirl, trying to live her dreams. :)
P.s. I've been playing around with the spelling of my name ( weird I know) and I've decided that I will stick with Hannah for good. Sorry I got you all confused. Hugs!! |

Posted - Sep 21 2010 : 08:36:12 AM Hello to you all! Judy, Laura Jane, Cynthia and Linda D - Thanks for the big welcome. Linda I appreciate the input for the chicken house info. I'll be looking that information up today. I'd really like to have everything ready before spring and try and get some young hens then. I ordered from a hatchery before and ended up with more than I really needed or wanted. I think 6 sounds better than 25. Raising the baby chicks is a big job too. Linda and Linda try to stay cool in this Indian Summer - it is supposed to be in the 90s everyday this week. Sherri

Posted - Sep 21 2010 : 05:58:04 AM Hi Sherri, I am Linda and I also live in Middle TN (murfreesboro) to be exact. I have 4 pygmy goats and 4 chickens. I only have about and acre so I had to go with a smaller chicken coop than most people do on a farm but it has worked out beautifully for me. If you look up images of chicken tractors you will find what my husband built for me. you can find chicken coop plans online or there is a youtube video called the ultimate chicken coop (I love it cause it is built by a girl). Hope this helps. quote: Originally posted by slreece

Posted - Sep 21 2010 : 04:38:58 AM Sherri, I'm not sure but you sound really close! I'm like 5 minutes from downtown Alexandria... I've heard of Pleasant Shade and always loved the name, but I'm not sure where you are... |

Posted - Sep 21 2010 : 04:30:50 AM I signed up to start my own "Charter" in the Alexandria area... I'm not sure I know what I'm doing, but I'm excited about it! Any help in that area would be greatly appreciated! *Yikes* I've been looking into the Nubian goats too. I hear there is a pretty good demand for the milk. Not sure where a reputable place to go for goats. I hear the auctions are bad... So I'm going to stay away from them. I see a lot of meat goat farms around. Does anyone have any info on who I might contact to get more info on purchasing... I have books galore on goats... it's overwhelming and I'm worried about them eating the wrong thing and them getting sick... I couldn't take it if my "babies" got sick... LOL Thanks! Linda |

Posted - Sep 16 2010 : 5:01:43 PM Hi Linda and welcome to you too. I hope you get some goats. I have Lamancha and Nubian. I am down to just 1 each right now. I will be looking for bucks soon so we can have some more kids. I love the milk. I have made soap. Need to make some more. It's fun but frustrating when it doesn't work. I have lots of beef fat in the freezer waiting to render so I can make some with beef tallow.
Sherri, next time you're down this way, let me know. That's strange to have names like that for towns. I wonder what the history is.

Posted - Sep 15 2010 : 2:47:51 PM Hi Kris & Linda Kris - We are about 2 1/2 hrs NNW of Chattanooga. Chickamauga is a very nice place. It has been awhile but I have been through the battlefield. We Southerners most especially liked this one ;). The Pleasant Shade area is as lovely as the name implies. Its surrounding areas are lovely too even though their names are Difficult and Defeated! lol
Linda - We are so close! How far from exit 254 are you? We are about 30 minutes north of Exit 258. Good luck with the animals and the soap business! My in-laws kept goats for years until my father-in-law passed a couple of years ago. My neighbor still has plenty and she loves hers! I love to watch the baby goats play!

Karla - I have a collection of pillow cases that my Great-Great Grandmother and my Great Grandmother embroidered. Your photos of the tea towel embroidery are sooo similar to the ones I have. Diane - I really think Sarah's vanity is precious and I love the photos. I can't wait to view your sites and others in more detail. I may even become inspired to blog! I got my farmgirl sister # today. I'm so exited! Can't wait to start on some badges!
