Hi. My name is Laura, and my husband and I fled from CA to WA in 2006. We love it here. We are starting to be self sufficient late in lfe. We are in our early 50's. I started canning last year. I also spin, crochet, sew, try to weave, and bake a lot. I'm glad I found this site.

Thank you JoAnn, now I know. You'd think with all those mushrooms there would at least be one fairy. But then again, none were in a ring.

A mushroom is the fruiting body of a fungus. So technically all the pictures were of mushrooms. Some people refer to mushrooms that are poisonous as toadstools. JoAnn

JoAnn, thank you and thank Jim, too. We thought they weren't edible. They are interesting to look at. When I get to getting the pictures off of the camera, there will be more pictures of some copper colored ones. Did Jim say if these are mushrooms or toadstools, and whats the difference between them?

Laura, Jim can possible identify some but there are no common names and it would just confuse you: ) None are edible. If you look on the undersides of the mushrooms some will have gills and some pores. The ones with pores are called boletes. Some are very delicious others will make you visit the bathroom a lot: ) Mushrooms are beautiful to look at kinda like enjoying wildflowers. We have been looking for the delicious chanterelles in northeastern Washington since we moved here 6 years ago with no luck. Been told it's too dry and the nearest is Priest Lake Idaho where indeed we found lots. Well two days ago Jim came back from a walk about 5 miles from our house and we found over 3 gallons of them! They hadn't been frozen either. It will be interesting to see if they will be there next year. We did have a pretty wet summer. JoAnn

JoAnn, I'll try and get the pictures to uplaod. I have several pictures. It would be great if your husband could identify them.

Laura, I was reading your blog and tried to post--don't think it went through. You were talking about finding mushrooms. My husband is a retired mycologist and if you post them he might be able to identify them. JoAnn

Yes, I actually forgot that part of your area is in the banana belt. Had some relatives who lived in Kettle Falls. It was always much more mild than Deer Park. We also did not get snow as the weatheman said we might. It was freezing, but I could see the stars. No precip last night! Yeah!

Claudia, We do not have snow yet. If Chewelah got some it's probably in the ski area. We are at about 2300 feet where we live (southwest of Colville) and we have to go up a long and steep county road to get here. It can be snowing here at the house, freezing rain halfway down the hill and raining in the valley. But I love it and since we don't have to go into town for work or anything it works out well. We do have recreational property near the lakes along Tiger Highway and winter comes there much early. JoAnn

Oh! An adult playdate. Sounds like fun. My daughters told me I should start a blog, and livinginasnow-globe sounded like a fitting name.

I live off of Highway 2 on Allen Rd. It's north of you, just across the Pend Oreille County line. Married to my husband of 21 years, he teaches at Riverside Middle School. We have a 16 year old son, Lacy the lab-mix, Rexi the Shih Tzu/chiauhua mix, 4 buff orpington laying hens and 3 Aracauna laying hens. I love your livinginasnowglobe! How perfect for our area!
I enjoy doing all sorts of crafty things, handwork, canning and baking and gardening. When we get our date for our next get-together I"ll make sure you get it. You too Sherry!

Thank you, Annika. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who wastes a lot of time on the computer for. Shannon, it's nice to meet anothe Elkian. I was calling us Elkites. I told family members that this was a weird way of meeting people, but with no car, you do what you have to do. I really like the name of your chapter. Where in Elk do you live. I live off of Elk-Chattaroy on Laurel. I originally found this site when it came up when I was searching canning questions. However I found it, I'm glad I did. JoAnn, when we ran away from CA, we were intending to land on the otherside of WA, but it was too congested and had no trees. Much better here.

Laura, I should have mentioned that when we moved here Jim had taken an early retirement which allowed us more freedom to be away from Spokane. We are always amazed when we hear people who live on the west side of the state com over are surprisedwe have trees and mountains here. Lots of them think we are all desert scablands or miles of fields of wheat.JoAnn

Hi Laura - I'm an "Elkian" as well! Welcome! I haven't been in touch with our other neighbor, Sherry, for awhile. Haven't logged in to get in touch! I look forward to keeping in touch with you Elk girls and doing a Farmgirl gathering in the near future. A gal friend and I started a chapter, Hick Chicks in the Sticks, and it is listed under Newport WA instead of Elk. We've gotten together once so far but are trying to meet again at my house in Elk.

JoAnn, my husband just meant the commute to work part. When we lived in CA, he commuted 60 miles each way, and a 120 mile trip to no place fun just wasn't going to happen once we moved up here. Now he works in Spokane Valley, but doesn't mind the drive because it's pretty up here. There are so many places we see up here where we say we'd be happy living. Actually, that would be just about anywhere with trees once you leave Spokane. We are small town people at heart, even tho Tim grew up in the LA area and I grew up in El Paso, TX. Claudia, I try to weave, but am crocheting a lot right now. My 4th grandchild is due Dec. 12, and I am crocheting for my sister-in-law who thinks San Diego is cold. I am unemployed since we moved to WA. I did work briefly at Borders in CDA when we lived in Rathdrum. I worked 8 1/2 years with the LA CO Public Libraries in CA. I was told I wouldn't make enough to justify my working now. I have no working car, I'd need clothes, etc. so I waste a lot of time on the computer because it's the only way (besides the phone) I get to talk to anyone. Ah, well. That's life. I hope you are enjoying your retirement.

JoAnn...your husband sounds like mine, however most of our families are in Spokane,so we are staying in this area. However, seems like the rural part of the land is being eaten up by houses between Spokane & Deer Park. JoAnn... do you have snow? I figured Chewelah was getting it last night. Laura, now being 65, I can understand your thoughts of not falling on the ice and snow. I mince around so as not to fall also. I'm scaring myself.
I love the thought that you weave. I don't do anything as sophisticated as that. I am a retired RN and so for over 40 years, everything was directed toward the essentials...raising kids, loving my dear husband/kids and WORKING! The kids remind me that many years after supper, I could be found sitting in my chair, snoring away...same story next day.

Better quit this and let you rest your eyes.... ;0) Claudia

Laura I had to chuckle when you said your husband thought Deer Park was too far from Spokane--my husband would have said Deer Park was too close : ) JoAnn

Hey, Claudia
I noticed you became a follower of my blog. Thank you. My experiences from desert rat to someone that lives with 4 seasons. I'm not allowed out once it freezes and snows, even with my Yak Traks and other spikey foot gear. I think Dr. Moran is tired of me breaking things. I know I am and so is the family.

Hey Laura, I read your blog and signed up as a follower. I think what was so fun about reading it, is that it belongs to a lady just down the road a few miles. Make sure you bundle up and don't slip if it snows tonight. I have to get me some more boots this year, It may be a doozy and I want to be prepared. Will look forward to reading what you have to say!

Hi Claudia, Tim and I looked at Deer Park originally to move to, but Tim decided it was too far from Spokane, which is funny because we ended up in Elk which is further away. I think Deer Paek is a nice little town.

Hey Laura! I just live down the road from you in Deer Park. Have been here for almost 40 years. I love everything about this area, except the infrequent nasty winters. ;0) Hope to meet you. I see that you have met Sheri from Elk. Seems like everyone is so busy that we don't get together when we have good intentions to do so. So welcome to the area.

Blessings & hugs!
