Posted - Nov 15 2010 : 10:02:28 AM Hello. My name is Rachael & I live in Prince George,VA. We recently moved to our new house so we could have more land so we could do more. We wanted a working homestead but were living on an acre & had it about as full as we could get it with rabbits, chickens, goats, pigs & a garden. We moved here where we have a little over 5 acres & we are hoping to add a cow. Luckily this place has a fenced in pasture it just needs a little clearing which is making the goats happy. We currently have 4 goats, about 40 chickens, not sure how many rabbits, quail, partridges, dogs & cats. We hatch our own eggs which is really neat. I love to bake and am working on learning to sew. I'm not the best at it but can do small things like make blankets & pillows just nothign fancy like make clothes but am working on it. We are currently working on getting a program up & running to help local food banks called plant a row for hunger where everyone plants a row or even just a plant & donates the food to the local food bank. We stay busy thats for sure. I would love to hear from others out there as I am new to the site & love to make new friends. |

Posted - Nov 18 2010 : 1:55:28 PM Rachael, welcome from Washington. I'm new here also and we are also trying to become self sufficient. My husband is thinking about raising rabbit for food. What kind to you raise to eat? I told Tim I would need some angora rabbits for my spinning, not eating.

Posted - Nov 18 2010 : 1:45:09 PM Hello Rachel, I am also new to this site. I belong to a rabbit rescue out of MD. We have 6 house rabbits and some days it's like having 10 2 yr olds, but we love them dearly. We have an old 1940's farm with 5 acres in PA and a house in MD. I have many gardens and we are now in process of putting up out buildings and next my grren hpuse and garden/ craft hobbie shed. I can't wait for them. It is hard as Gerry is retired still working 40 hrs in MD and I keep the house in PA until it gets to cold.

Posted - Nov 15 2010 : 4:02:12 PM I love the idea of this site. You don't meet many people who are into the same things or even understand why we would want to be self sufficient. I love that there are others out there I can talk to & ask questions. |

Posted - Nov 15 2010 : 3:46:17 PM Good luck on getting the ordinance changed. As for your rabbit don't be discouraged. Most rabbits 1st litter rarely make it. What kind of rabbits do you have? We mostly have california & new zealands but have a few fuzzy lops, mini lops, lionheads & san juans too. We used to do a rabbit rescue but when we moved we decided not to keep it up so we just have a lot of pet rabbits right now, some we raise for food some I am trying to find homes for. It's a lot of work but it's rewarding. We want to be completely self sufficient within the next 5 years. If you have any questions with your rabbits i can help you out. We have been raising them for a few years now so I have learned the good & the bad. |

Posted - Nov 15 2010 : 3:26:20 PM A big Wisconsin hay dare to ya Rachael! We are so glad you joined us. Sounds like you have quite a little farm going there. My DH and I are looking for our hobby farm currently. We are practicing on our double size city lot. I also have rabbits, just had our first baby. She only had one live one. Better luck next time! We can't have chickens yet, I am trying to get my city to change the ordinance. There are a lot of friendly, talented and helpful farmgirls here for you.
