Hi everyone!
I never managed to post much after joining and then we moved and I've been so busy setting up here ever since that I haven't been around. So let me start again...
I’m a SAHM with one son (3 years old), expecting baby number 2 in March. DH is a Phd student. We live on a 28 acre farm in western Quebec (Canada) belonging to my parents. I grew up here and have been begging them to hold on to it for me as long as I can remember. We moved here a year and a half ago after DH finished his course work.
We have three horses (my stallion, a mare, and their foal who was born in August), a pot-bellied pig (she works in our garden and saves me HOURS of back breaking work), 2 dogs, a cat, a coop full of chickens and a big garden.
We bought a cow in June of this year but she was only here 12 hours before she broke out of our field. It took us three days to find her. She had had her first calf a week before so she was newly fresh and very skittish. We should have known better than to try a new milker when we were new to it ourselves but I’m used to large animals and I really thought that if we were kind and patient enough it would be okay and in every other way she was exactly what we were looking for. For the short time she was with us she was very aggressive- we couldn’t get near her to milk her. Once we found her we knew the best thing for her and for us would be to take her back.
We just found a new cow and will be bringing her home this weekend. She is a three year old jersey and is due to calf (third calf) in June. Perfect timing as it will give me time to adjust after having the new little one before I have to start milking. The lady we are getting her from says that last summer her four year old daughter was milking her, sounds good to me! My only concern is that jerseys are really not made for our climate so we’ll have to be careful to make sure she stays warm enough.
