As I have been paging through the chat rooms, I don't think I have seen one yet about sharing "Home Remedies" with each other. I have been able to pick up several ideas with regards to gardening, and items found in the home to use with regards to making and keeping your garden healthy, but how about items we use every day with in our own homes? Not only would this help with keeping us "green", and safing our environment, but also this would be another way to keep the farmgirl spirit alive. How do you fellow farmgirls sisters feel about sharing ideas on something like this?
OK I will start... I found an interesting way to remove product build up from your hair. I have tried this, and it leaves the hair very soft and shiney. Take 1-2 tablespoon of baking soda, and mix it well with a galon of rinse water. After washing your hair, and prior to conditioning, rinse with the mixture. You may want to rewash your hair prior to conditioning. This should remove any hairspray or product build up on your hair, use weekly, or as desired. So who's next?.......
I just thought this would be a fun way to see what others have to offer.

I'm new here, too - My favorite home remedy would be 'honey' for burns. We have used it many times with great success. You simply put honey right on the burn and wrap it with a paper towel or clean cloth. Just let it sit for a few minutes. The 'burning' feeling will disapper and the redness will heal quickly. Thanks for all the great tips! This is fun!

Sharon,

Try some activated charcoal. You might be able to get it at a pet supply store, as that is what is put in fish tank filters. Put some in a small bowl and put it in the fridge. It might help.

Do you think the cider vinegar with baking soda would help with dandruff? My dh has it. Not too bad but his head is often itchy.

Once again, it has been a while since I have been online here, and I can see a few additions to the blog, what great ideas! I can't wait to try the dawn/vineager mixture, I now have a perplexing problem I am hoping someone has an answer for. I had this terrible smell in my refrigerator last week, so I cleaned it out completely, threw away all of the science projects I thought might be making the smell, wiped it clean with vineager, and bleach, however I still have a slight hint of the smell. I have 2 boxes of baking soda in it already, and thoguht that would help. Any other ideas? I look forward to hearing your suggestions!

I use vinegar as a fabric softner in my rinse cycle. And as said before it also is an odor nuetrilizer.

Glenda, I'm glad you shared about the spiderweb, my Momma always told me to leave one spiderweb somewhere in the house in case someone got a bad cut that wouldn't stop bleeding...never had to use it but so glad you found out that it worked, but so sorry that your SIL had to get cut to see it worked. Welcome to the Farm...

Re home remedies----I am new - just signed up today and you've probably all heard this but the very best thing for a burn is to keep an aloe vera plant, break off a piece and keep the gel smeared on the burn, even a bad one and it will go away quick. Works really well for sunburn, too. Also a few years ago my son in law cut his thumb with a sharp knife, we are 45 minutes from the emergency room, I had read that spiderweb would stop bleeding, we were pretty desperate because he was bleeding badly, so went out to the barn and gathered up spiderweb (those thick white, cottony looking ones), put it on the thumb and it actually worked. I don't recommend it as a substitute for going to the doctor, but in an emergency it's a thought.

I am not sure if I mentioned this earler in the blog, but Vineager is not only good for cleaning, it is also great as a deodorizer. I soak a cotton boal, and put it under my sink, where the garbage can sits, and I can't smell any foul odor under there, especially during the summer. I also put soaked cotton balls on a piece of foil in my kitchen when I am frying fish, and there is never an odor. And it is pet friendly!

Hi ladies! What great ideas! So many of you are new and I've not gotten to meet you so welcome to MJF's! I can see that you'll be great additions to this site. If you need yet another idea for baking soda try adding a couple drops of essential oil in your favorite scent to a box and sprinkle it on your carpeting. Let set a few minutes to an hour and vacuum. Smells wonderful and dirt cheap.

Wow!! I haven't been able to check in for a while, I love all of the ideas posted!. Kim, thanks for the bathroom cleaner recipie! That is one to definitely try. I have used Dawn for so many things around the house too. It makes a great car wash, as it does not spot or leave a film after rinsing. I have also used it to pretreat any stains prior to washing clothes. Cate, thanks for the "sickness" tea also, with a 4 y/o in the house, they seem to bring every germ home from school and daycare. I will be whipping up a batch today, as I am feeling slightly under the weather!

After you use this bathroom cleaner a few times and get all the soap scum that you didn't know you had off then you can actually cut it with a little water and it will do the job.

Kim that's a great recipe! I'm giving that a try too. I've been making a bathroom scrub with dish soap (or liquid castille soap like Dr Bronners) mixed with baking soda.

Also, I make a tea when I'm sick - 3 cups water and 3 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced, brought to a boil. Once it boils, take it off the heat, strain it and add juice of half a lemon and honey to taste. Drink it warm 1/2 cup at a time through the day and you'll knock out pretty much anything. It's kinda gnarly, but just cowboy up and swig it. It's worth it.

Honey can be used as a topical antibiotic. Aloe Vera straight from the plant is good for almost any skin condition. Just break off a piece and squeeze out the juice. I just rub it straight from the plant onto the skin. I even use it on scratches and scraps on the horses.

Thoughts are things choose the good ones.

I am kinda new around here too. But I so enjoy reading all you ladies have to share. I have not read all there is to read but I was wanting to share something here. Hope it is not a repeat.

I take a windex type bottle and add 1/2 cup of dawn dish detergent and then fill the bottle with white vinegar. This is the best bathroom cleaner you will ever use. Your chrome will shine like never before. And any soap scum you have will be gone for good. I have even used this on clothes for stains.

For anyone who has ever managed to burn something in a pot or pan .... (if you haven't, I want to know your secret) ... I have yet another use for that "miracle worker" - Baking Soda. Toss a goodly amount of baking soda over the burned stuff in your pot (or pan) and add hot water just to cover. Let it soak overnight (or a little longer if it's really bad) and chances are you won't have to use any extra effort to clean it easily.

I've had to repeat the procedure once or twice on a really tough burn - but all I can say is - no more scrubbing with Brillo pads trying to do away with burned on gunk. It's amazing.

Onions believe it or not are useful things! If you get stung slice an onion and put it over the sting. It will draw out the poison and take away the red and the pain. They are also really good for fevers. Put onion in your socks and it will draw the fever out of your head.

If you are burnt (minor not in need of a hospital type burn) egg whites coated on the burn is supposed to help. So is honey. I know lavendar oil does.

Headache? Peppermint oil. Tummy ache? Peppermint or chamomile oils, ginger chews. Muscle spasms? Helichrysum oil.

Excuse the mess & the noise, my children are making happy memories

Cindy, I never thought of smelling a peppermint tea bag for nausea, As a Home Health RN, I am always looking for ideas to tell patient's rather than pushing another pill for a symptom. I will definitely try this myself, and refer it to my patients, Thanks! And thanks Jennifer for the vinegar to water ratio, I am going to try this tomorrow. So Many great ideas, ...I love it!
