Good morning!

I'm Abi. I'm new to farm life. Originally from the Detroit area. My husband recently left the Army and settled us on 2.5 acres coastal Texas. I'm looking forward to learning from you all and making new friends!

Hi Abi! I'm a native of Texas, have lived all over but hubby and I met and married in Victoria. We are also in the army, we have 5 years left until retirement and are hoping to get stationed in TX next and buy land to settle on and start our farm. I didn't realize tx has a program for vets to buy land, would you be willing to direct me in the right place to find more about that? Welcome to MJF you will love it here, this is one of the best bunches of ladies I know!!!

Welcome!! We're kinda neighbors....at least in the Texas sense of the word (Texas is so big that anything within 2 hours can be considered 'down the road'. I'm a little north of Houston. We'll have to have a lunch meetup one day.

Welcome, Abi! I'm not too far from you. I'm north of Houston. We have a group of farmgirls that have an annual glampout and one of the gal's horse ranch. We've gone walking around and shopping at Old Town Spring. We also meet various other times of the year to just go eat out at a restaurant. I'll keep you posted on upcoming activities.

You will love the Texas coast. Gardening may be a bit of a challenge due to the salt in the air. But, growing fruits and veggies definitely can be done.I lived in Galveston for 2 years and Crystal Beach for 5. While I lived in Crystal for only 5 years, our family has had a cabin there for 40+ years. My mom was the first grade teacher at the elementary school. Sadly, we lost the house in Hurricane Ike.

I look forward to one day meeting you!

Welcome, Abi! I have a chapter, though we are in East Texas. I maintain a Facebook group page, and any TX ladies are certainly welcome to join. It is a lovely group of fun and very sweet ladies. We don't get together much, but we still share information through our page. We have held classes on breadmaking, sewing, herbal remedies, a wine tasting session, food storage, and several more. Anyway, I started my own Chapter when I realized there was not one in the area. :) Comment on this forum if you are interested! ~A

Hello Abi! and Welcome!

We'll love hearing about your adventures on your little farm! I've not spent much time in Texas and definitely not anywhere near the coast so I'll love hearing about what you've got going on!

Hi Abi, I'm so glad to meet you! There's so much to learn, and so many wonderful people to meet. I can't wait to hear how you new life develops. I'm also a knitter, and have really gotten back into it since joining the forum. It's so much fun! Hugs!

Abi - Maybe you could check out the merit badges for a place to begin. They all start with a beginner level and move on to intermediate and then advanced. You could probably do some of them right away, and it does give you sort of a structure to work in.

The other thing I would do (and it was a great way for me to start) would be to find a chatroom kind of group to hang out in. I think it says "Gathered Up" on the list of all forums. I am in the "Over 50 Farmgirls" but there are groups that focus on lots of other things -- folks with kids, people who are beginning farmers, people who HOPE to have a farm someday, Christian farmgirls -- you could check out a few of those -- nothing to join or anything, but you could find people who share your interests. When I first started in the sisterhood, I spent lots of time just reading the different forums.

Just jump right in and enjoy! I am a knitter, too -- would I see you on ravelry?

WELCOME!!!

Oh Wanda, I'll have to come visit and love on your fur babies. We have rescued fur babies too.

To answer some questions:
We have no idea what we want to do with the land yet. We'll be adding a house for my mom. The main house is 100 years old. I think this is mostly for experimentation while we're both still working. In a few years, my husband wants to purchase some land elsewhere. Texas has a nice program set up for veterans to buy land.

I knit everything, but I love to knit lace. I also spin and crochet.
TexasWildflower Posted - Sep 29 2015 : 5:41:08 PM
Abi - I'm ashamed to say that I really have no idea. Not that I know of, but there could be. You see, I'm a one woman Jane-of-all-trades on 25 acres, taking care of 8 rescued fur buddies, and banging my head on the desk trying to get things together for the publisher for a book to be published in Nov., so I wouldn't have time if there was. However, you could probably check with MaryJane since I'm sure there is a list. Good luck!

Welcome Abi from over here in Gainesville, Florida! It is great to have you join in. Just so you know, many us don't love on farms, but we all have that Farmgirl Heart, as MaryJane calls it!! I am a city girl living that Farmgirl life here at MJF. What do you like to knit? Do you spin your own wool?
