Posted - Feb 26 2016 : 7:34:34 PM My husband drills a hole in the center and threads half a dozen or so on a loop of wire. Then when he goes to someone's farm to shear sheep and they forgot to get the sheep in, he can get them to quickly move where he wants by making an unusual rattling sound behind them.

Posted - Feb 20 2016 : 9:25:03 PM Some good ideas here, I'll have to try the wind chime trick to keep the birds out of the garden.
Last summer at our local arts and crafts fair I saw some canning jar lids that had been transformed into garden markers by painting or decorating them with the plant names and then hanging them on a wire or wood stake. I think the lady had also decopauged old seed packet labels onto some of them and then sealed it with some type of varnish so they would weather outdoors. She has also fashioned some into ornaments and magnets as well.

Posted - Feb 20 2016 : 1:00:36 PM I may try to make sort of a "windchime" with some of mine for the purpose of scaring the flickers away from the house, so they don't come and try to peck on it. They are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO annoying! I have successfully used old CDs hung along the eaves. They don't make noise but the shininess reflecting in the sunshine deters them!

Posted - Feb 18 2016 : 6:48:27 PM Welcome Charlene! Glad to see you join the farm. I have seen people turn their canning lids into ornaments or wind chimes. I haven’t personally done this but their projects always turn out so cute!

Posted - Feb 18 2016 : 6:13:48 PM Hi Charlene,
Welcome!
You could also repurpose the lids with jars (they fit glass mayo jars, too), and use the lidded jars to hold buttons (make a pin cushion on top), or fill with sand or shells, close, put fabric on top to decorate and light a faux electric tea light candle to illuminate inside. I use jars for all sorts of things, decorative and useful.

Posted - Feb 18 2016 : 3:41:16 PM Hi Charlene, Welcome, welcome! Hope you have a great time here on the Connection!
And, I agree with Sara, I use them for plant markers, either rows in the garden or plant "pokes" in pots. CJ

Posted - Feb 17 2016 : 2:50:12 PM Charlene, Welcome to the Farm.
I make plant markers out of either used canning lids or tin can lids. I nail them to twigs, dowels, whatever strikes my fancy. If a container has a handle I will punch a hole in the lid with a big nail and tie the marker with twist ties or wire.
I write name of plant with permanent marker or make name by punching holes with a nail.
