My almost 17 year old son wanted me to list some of his photos for sale on the web. So, I posted some photos on my site but I do not understand how to do the Paypal checkout. Does anyone have experience with that?

Yes that is supposed to just be a true donation, I think. You should just turn your paypal account into a business account so you can use their "Shopping Cart" buttons and such. It is pretty easy and I love having a business account. But that's just my opinion!

Yes, that is what I want. But, it doesn't have a place for them to designate what they are paying for, just that they are making a donation. That is what I am trying to figure out.
So...I am wondering if that should only be for a monetary donation and not for something in return????? Am I thinking right?

The donation button is for if people want to donate to YOU. It does not allow them to donate to anyplace they pick. If someone donated it would go into your account.

Thanks everyone. I see what I was doing wrong. I was trying to set up for donations and that must be different than sales for which I need a merchant account. Hmmmmm.....
So can someone explain how to set up Paypal for donations? I have a Paypal button on my site and it does work but there is no place for the payer to say what the donation is for.
Well, in the meantime, I opened an etsy store and posted a few of my son's photos.

Sign into your PayPal account and then click products and services. There is an area on the page where you can set up a PayPal cart for your website. You will have to copy and past HTML code, set up descriptions and decide on shipping rates. Sounds harder than it actually is.

Lynn-
You need to sign up as a business account to do the paypal checkout.
Once you have become a business account, click on "Merchant Services"
There should be some columns on this page. One is "Create Buttons" Pick which type of button you want and it walks you through it. It is very intuitive once you get to that point. Please feel free to ask me more questions here or email me if you want more step-by-step instructions.

Oops! Sorry. I need to say this differently. I've been an ebay seller for years so I know the basics. What I want to know is...when I put the Paypal logo on my web site, where do I find an order form or something to add so the customer can say what they want? Did I saw that better this time? : )

The buyer, using your email address, sends you the money, paypal charges a small fee and you have an account the money goes into (which you need to go and register for...or once someone sends you money paypal will send you an email asking you to register- I think). Now- you can use that money to buy things on etsy, ebay, etc. or have paypal transfer the money to a bank account which takes a few days (I have not done this part so you would have read a paypal tutorial, these are easy to understand and find).
