The orphanage is pleased to announce that both these dear little ones have found homes.

well!! SISTER MERCY thought Sister Frances Catherine had taken a little 'vacation' .. but upon wakening early this morning .. she found her in the garden having her 'morning prayers' of thankfulness.

Sister Frances Catherine admitted to a 'nirvana' moment as her train headed in a south-easterly direction .. and she found herself 'drawn' to leave the train at Harlan, Kentucky.

Somehow she knew there was a 'mission' waiting there for her. Sister Frances Catherine headed directly for the Appalachian Child Care Asylum and discovered there were two little girls up younder in the mountains who were 'taking care of themselves'. Sister hired a local 'mule' and travelled the windy, hilly slopes until she came upon a small dark log cabin in 'hootin holler' .. and commenced to knock on the door.

A sleepy little chile who shyly introduced herself as Maybelle-Beth invited Sister in for a cup of tea. Maybelle-Beth excused herself to go rouse her little cousin Jauncie-June from the featherbed. Soon Jauncie-June joined Sister and Maybelle-Beth at the hand-hewn wooden table for a cup of tea and (what Sister surmised to be) quite old stale bread.

The cousins told the sad tale of how both their parents had been 'took off ta' heaven' .. and they commenced to go live with their elderly grandmother .. who had recently joined their parents.

The chillun are in their mid-teens and so far had not asked for any charity .. but the winter had been rough on them and while they looked forward to plump blueberries from the surrounding forest and fresh fish from the river .. they were quite lonely.

Their mothers (who had been sisters) taught them early on to sew .. and their 'sewies' were on a chair by the fireplace. The spoke fondly of learning to quilt when time would spare.

Sister told them of SISTER MERCY's FOUNDLING HOME and said that they would be loved and would mos' likely find loving families to care for them. She said she could honestly not promise that they would go to the same families .. but she was sure, as was often the case .. that sisters, cousins and good friends who were separated were allowed to write to one another .. and perhaps even be sent for a trip to visit each other from time to time.

She told them that the Foundling Home was nestled in a valley much like their own .. abundant with loving 'sisters' who would love them and teach them and tell them stories of their merciful God. She promised them that if for some reason no families came forth .. that they could live forever happy at the Foundling Home. No rag chile was EVER asked to leave and go out on her own until she felt she was 'ready'.

Their little faces lit up .. they hugged each other .. knelt in prayers of 'thanks giving' .. excitedly packed up their fabrics, laces, pin cushions, and a quilt they were working on .. and brought them along.

On this misty Kentucky Morning, Sister Frances Catherine smiled at Sister Mercy and said they were tucked in bed sleeping soundly and dreaming of new homes.

Sister Mercy knew without Sister Frances Catherine even telling her .. that her 'sabbatical' and been a special calling and she heard with her heart that there was a reason for her to be on that train and that no 'vacation' could ever be as fulfilling as finding little ones in need that they could help.

The chillun, as all chillun are that arrive at the Foundling Home, are hoping for loving homes and momma's that love to sew.

Contact Sister Mercy's Foundling home .. if you have room in your hearts and homes for these two dear little friends.

(AND .. the Appalachian Asylum has promised to send along any other little ones that need homes .. so be watching for them too!)

It is with a GREATFUL heart that Sister Mercy and all the Sisters at the Foundling Home thank each and every one of the families that have adopted these angel-chilluns.

As always, the Foundling Home enjoys being able to offer these little ones for very reasonable adoption and travelling fees.

Each rag chile and all her sewies is but $23. and that INCLUDES train fare!

visit the Foundling Home for more photos!

fRANNIE,
Sesms like just yesterday you were off for a rest form the girls. Well these things happen. I'm always very tempted to buy another one, they are just so darn cute. But I must remain firm that five girls is a lot to handle and I'm getting older.
