   Hey Farm Girls!!!
We are working on a kids' candle-making project here at the library. We found a site that described using acorn squash as the base for a candle. Have any of you ever used produce as a base for candles?
The hour is late, and we are feeling quite silly. We have even thought of clear candles that had hot dogs floating in them. LOL

Every Halloween, I use the little mini pumpkins as candle holders. I hollow out a section so that a candle will fit in tightly and set them on different plates or surfaces surrounded by indian corn, etc. I've also used apples in the same way.

   Hey Farm Girls
I just knew that one of you would have some info on this. The other librarian said that the acorn squash would be a kind of mold and that the last step would be to peel the squash from the hardened wax.
Would love to learn more about the little pumpkins.

Posted - Feb 21 2006 : 07:59:34 AM When you say as a base, do you mean as the container to hold the wax and wick?
If so I think it would work fine, but would need to be used quickly before the squash would mold/rot.
I have made some soy candles in little hollowed out baby boo pumpkins and they turned out real well!!
I would steer clear of the gel wax it has alot of dangers from what I have read.
I would use a all Soy wax and a natural wick. The soy is great because it melts at a lower temp so their is less worry of burns when working with kids.
If you have questions or would like some links for supplies just let me know via email.
