Posted - Jun 15 2011 : 2:49:38 PM When I went to town earlier, I noticed lots of elderberry flowers all along the roads. I wrote down where I saw them so in the fall I can go elderberry picking. I ordered 2 pounds last year and I have about 1 1/2 cups left. I hope I remember that far away. I'll put the paper on the fridge so I'll see it later.
Elderberry flowers are so pretty.
Has anyone else noticed any around?

Posted - Jul 06 2011 : 08:41:43 AM I am going to try the wine in the fall. I am seeing so many more elderberry bushes everywhere I go. I don't know why I never noticed them last year. They are easy to spot right now with the flowers blooming so I hope they are easy to see later with the dark berries. But they sure are plentiful here. I will save money picking my own and maybe have some to sell too.

Posted - Jul 01 2011 : 09:44:16 AM For those of you who haven't tried it yet, elderberry wine is absolutely the best. My daughter collects the blossoms and makes elderberry blossom tea. It is very good to drink hot or cold. It doesn't take long for them to dry and then you steep them in boiling water, strain, add sugar and drink to your delight. It's good medicine, too, but I don't remember exactly what for. The blossoms are starting to fade now, but you may still be able to find some along the roadsides and fields. Farmers say they are an annoying weed - maybe for them, but not to everyone. So help a farmer and clear out the elderberries from their fields. :o)
Enjoy the blessings of your day. |

Posted - Jun 23 2011 : 6:07:09 PM I read they can be propagated from hardwood cuttings when they are dormant. How that is done I'm not sure. But it can be googled! Connie

Posted - Jun 23 2011 : 6:01:21 PM I've not made the wine, although I'd love to give it a try. Hopefully I'll be able to get enough berries to try a few things. I'm not sure how well a clipping would do being shipped (especially in this heat we're having), I'm not even sure where the best place to clip from would be.

Posted - Jun 23 2011 : 1:57:12 PM So has anyone ever made elderberry wine? I think I will be making some this fall with some of the millions of berries I will be gathering. I so excited to see so many of them all over the place. Everywhere I go I am seeing the plants. I just hope they will be as noticable in the fall with the dark berries.
Jenn, that's what I did all winter last year. I made syrup with honey, ginger, cinnamon sticks and cloves. I make 4 cups at a time.
Angie, I have no idea about how they would do dug up. But I would think they could be. It would have to be small ones. I know I saw someone's blog about elderberry hunting in Wa. That's where I got the recipe for the syrup. So someone closer would surely be able to help you. Maybe ask around.

Posted - Jun 23 2011 : 07:16:27 AM Elderberries usually grow on the perimeters of waterways like streams, lakes or swamps...that would be a good first place to look. They seem to also like full sun. The flowers and berries are strong diaphoretics, they induce sweating and help lower fevers. I make the berries into a syrup using honey or glycerin which is more palatable to kids. I use the flowers in a tincture or tea.

Posted - Jun 16 2011 : 05:49:14 AM My first experience with elderberry was early this year. I had a horrible attack of the flu with really bad congestion. I friend made some cough syrup of cherry bark and elderberry juice, along with other ingredients. Loved the taste! I will have to google this berry and I hope we have some here!

Posted - Jun 15 2011 : 4:14:55 PM Yeah, we've got several here. I just recently discovered they are elderberries! I had asked my mom a while back and she said "it's just a big weed cut it down" but I didn't because I thought it was pretty, so now I have 3 big plants in the yard and several more in the wooded areas around, not to mention all the ones on the roadside here. I'm looking forward to picking some this year!
