Caleb Nord should be like other two year old little boys. He should be laughing and playing and enjoying his young life. But last year he was diagnosed with a very serious illness and had to have chemotherapy and all sorts of treatment to prepare his body for a bone marrow transplant which he did receive..... all before his 2nd birthday which was last October 8th, 2010.

But now the illness has returned to his little boy. Caleb is in the hospital right now after surgery yesterday. His family has been there for him through all this ordeal. THe doctors are still reviewing what his treatment will be.

What Caleb Nord and his family really needs are prayers. So I am hoping that our dear Farmgirl Sisters will come to his aid and include this little 2 year old and 4 months in their prayers.

Here's Caleb story and updates from his mommy, Ann Nord....

There is a foundation organized by parents of HLH children called Liam’s Lighthouse at LiamsLighthouseFoundation.org and on Facebook. Since February is Rare Disease Month over 100 parents and volunteers of Liam’s Lighthouse Foundation will be outside the Today’s Show in NYC on next Tuesday, Feb 28th, 2011 publicizing awareness for HLH. This organization will be holding a picture of Caleb along with many other children affected by HLH.....

Caleb Nord was diagnosed with HLH all before his 2nd birthday in 2010. Please continue to pray for him and his recovery.

Here's an update on Caleb......

This 2 year-old boy, Caleb Nord, is still receiving chemotherapy and steroid treatments to enable his body to go into remission.

Caleb's Mommy, Ann Nord, does a fantastic job updating on www.caringbridge.org/visit/calebnord but she has been sick and isolated from the family for about a week. She is slowly regaining her strength from a bad flu and will update the site soon.

Please include Ann in your prayers for her recovery and regaining of her strength.

Two year old little boys deserve to be healthy and read to their dogs like Caleb is doing right here. So let's keep up those prayers and believe in the power of prayer in helping Caleb through this new treatment....

We continue to hold the Nord family in our hearts and prayers. Ann and Jeremy Nord along with their daughter Hannah (Caleb's sister) are champions in the advocacy for Caleb's recovery. His ability to rebound to the extent he has is testimony to the amazing ability his parents have in understanding this very complex and complicated illness and therefore making the best decisions for Caleb going forward.

Happy 7th anniversary through trying times for Ann and Jeremy Nord.

Today, February 17th, 2011 is the 7th wedding anniversary for Caleb's mom, Ann and her husband. Let's take a moment to say a prayer for this couple that have been through so much. Ann is a little under the weather just you can understand with soooo much stress and worry in her life as Caleb's mom. Let's say a prayer that Ann feels better today and can enjoy a little time with her hubby of 7 years today.

Linda and Jennifer, thank you for your notes and your prayers. Here's where you can light the candles safely and smoke-free.....

http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng&gi=CALEB

These candles burn for 48 hours. It's easy to do and doesn't cost a penny either. It's also great because you can go to work and never worry about the candle being unattended like our regular candles.

Hi Karyn,

Hope we get more sunshine and less wind today ....... Caleb is the son of Ann Nord whose messages I have been sharing and posted her photo as well. I do have a son of my own and remember only too well what it was like having a sick son who did spend time on his 4th birthday in the hospital one year and in emergency on Father's Day one year. So I pray for Ann Nord and her hubby and their daughter and the family, including Caleb's Grandmother, Rhonda Peterson, who is my friend and how I learned about Caleb Nord.

There is now a plan in place for 2 year old Caleb Nord and his treatment that the doctors and specialists have agreed upon.....

Dr Messinger and Dr Smith have been in contact with Dr Baker and Dr Filipovich and they all agree on the same plan: He will get a total of 4 doses of Etoposide (he's had 3 already) and 4 doses of intrathecal chemo (this Thursday will be his 2nd dose). He will stay on the Dexamethasone and weaned per the 2004 protocol. He will also stay on his Cyclosporine for awhile longer.

They are all thinking that because his NK cell function is so low, that's why he reactivated. NK cells take a long time to start working after transplant, so their hope is that with this treatment plan, it will hold off the HLH long enough for the new NK cells to start working properly. This is all very good news and gives even more hope that caleb will not have to go through another BMT.

Thank you Farmgirls who have been including Caleb in your prayers. Let's keep them up that this treatment round be successful and not require another BMT.

Sending messages of love and hope to Caleb and lighting a candle is very easy to do. THere isn't any cost either to light these candles either.

It's a very special experience of lighting a candle of HOPE and LOVE and this will mean so much for Caleb and his family during this medical ordeal.

We all know that FARMGIRLS have big hearts of love and caring! Let's send messages and tell Caleb he is in our prayers!

Last year Caleb needed a BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT. Now the HLH has returned and it will have to be decided what form of treatment to follow. Another BMT is an option. Specialists are reviewing the info and trying for the best option.

Here's a photo of Caleb and his parents last year during the transplant.

Many of us are parents and know first hand how hard it is to have a sick child in pain. Here is a very special message to my Farmgirl Sisters from Caleb's mommy, Ann Nord.....

"I can't tell you how many times I have wished this was all happening to me instead of him. He hasn't known life outside of clinics, hospitals, pokes, masks, etc. He hasn't ridden the bus on his first day of school, had his fist kiss, experienced graduation, college, marriage...for crying out loud, he hasn't even played at a playground without a mask and constant hand washing since he was 9 months old! All that we can do as his parents, is to trust in his medical team and pray, pray, and pray some more. As a mother, I feel that I need to able to shelter my children from pain, protect them constantly, and I struggle everyday with the fact that I have no physical control over HLH. I need to trust in God and the physicians.

This summer was supposed to be the best summer ever. Sort of a 'make up' for last summer. We were so looking forward to a mask-free, go anywhere, do anything kind of season. We're heartbroken, yet hopeful that next year will be Caleb's first healthy, carefree year and he can make mud pies in the summer, and throw snowballs in the winter, and never have to wear a mask again!

We would like to thank everyone for helping us in so many ways, you have no idea how much it all means to us." 2-11-11

Thank you Farmgirl Sisters for those prayers! You are indeed wonderful!

Next week he will have to return to the clinic….He got another Etoposide infusion and will go back to clinic on Monday for another. He got another dose of Caspofungen, as it can only be administered via IV. It’s a medication to prevent fungal infections.

Caleb tested positive for pneumonia (Mycoplasma), so that explains the pleural effusions around his lungs.

All this happening to a little boy who is barely more than 2 years old. Prayers are still very much needed.

Caleb is back home again from the hospital but I wouldn't say he is exactly doing well..... if you don't count the constant screaming from the Dexamethasone. The steroids that he is receiving cause him to have constant screaming fits, and not just the "terrible two temper tantrums", the screaming can last hours. When he screams, he's not sure what he wants, which makes it really hard on his family you can imagine.

Please keep praying for him....... he is simply home for the time being but his treatment is far from being over with. This is not one well little boy at all.

My Farmgirl Sisters are indeed wonderful and caring! Thank you for your prayers for this little boy who is at the Children's Hospital and Clinic in Minnesota, USA.

When Caleb Nord was 19 months old, he was diagnosed with FHL-V (Familial Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis V). This is commonly referred to as HLH. Last year he spent much of the summer going through chemotherapy and radiation to prepare his body for a bone marrow transplant that he very much needed.

Just this past Wednesday his mom, Ann Nord, reported that he had surgery which went well. He has a brand new functioning port and other than being sore, he is doing fantastic! They said that his old port had a hole in it and it came out easily. They also removed the temporary central line that was in his neck. He also had another LP and intrathecal chemo while he was sedated.

The plan is to give him Etoposide and then again next Monday and Thursday (then it will go down to once a week). He will also get another LP (spinal tap) and intrathecal chemo next Thursday and the steroid dosage will be lowered next week as well. He will get IVIG weekly this time, which is a change from last year.

WHether or not Caleb will need to go to transplant again is still a decision is made, but there is a chance that he may not need another BMT (BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT). All of this on a little boy who is just 2 years and 4 months old! This has to be incredibly hard on the family including his mother and his sister.

Prayers from my Farmgirl Sisters is indeed a blessing!
