As far back as I can remember, at least the age of 4, I have suffered migraines. My grandma, mom, and both my daughters too. They are crippling. They always last one day. Normally letting up once we get sick. This is the second time this year I have had a migraine last for days at a time. Today is day three. I have tried every Rx available, with the exception of sulfur based drugs. I am allergic. I'm also very sensitive to mess. The "non-drowsy" meds knock me out. I have 4 children, and two are very young. I can't sleep during the day, or accomplish anything while drugged. But, this pain is making it close to impossible to get anything done. Every time my DS cries, I get sick. My Dr has gone as far as to try blood pressure meds, but I run a very low blood pressure, so I drop to critical using it. I am so tired. The pain has lasted so long, I can't keep anything down, and I'm so shaky, holding my little ones is frightening. I'm so sorry to whine, but I could really use prayer. Thank you all for being here. You've been so dear to me.

If anyone has any migraine remedies that have worked, is love pointers too. you'd think with 5+ generations of women suffering these, we'd have it down pat! We don't. We just Medicare, hide in a dark room, and grab a waste basket and cool washcloth....

Wow Michele, thank you, for the advise and for taking the time to write all that!! :) I'm sorry so many of us get migraines, its so hard to get up and do what you HAVE to do, let alone get any new projects started, they're just no fun!!
When I have one, eating isn't possible. I am bad about eating triggers b4 I get a migraine. I drink more water than anyone I know. So dehydration isn't my problem. I know as I got older, as with all the women in my family, they were diagnosed as hormonal menstrual migraines, commin on the day before a period starts, and commin back at the end of the cycle. I just have a hard time believing that is the diagnosis. Maybe our periods were a trigger, but these started for me around 6or 7. My DD's are 5 and 7, and they get them. I also get them when its no where near that time of the month. I haven't had a period in over two years, due to my iud, but around the last week of the month lately, I still seem to get the migraine.
I am blown away by the thought that heat helps your head. Oh how my head throbs with heat. I'm glad you found something that help you though. I get almost all my headaches in my sleep. Makes for a great morning, doesn't it?! Ghost migraine last another 5-7 days for me afterwards too. I will try the excedrin tension, and the midol, thanks to all for the advice!

Thanks, Kathy

I too started getting migraines at age 15.....I have had some that have lasted more than 7 days....I used to have to go to the ER & have them knock me out & my husband carry me to the car...this was back in the late 1970's...for me the throwing up made them worse so I don't eat if I have a nasty one...but yes any dairy:milk, cream, butter, ice cream, cream sauces, milk based salad dressing
processed food/meats: bacon, lunch meats, cured meats, dried fish
Eggs, cheeses, yogurts, sour cream....Campbells chicken noodle soup (high in salt so depletes body of water to rid itself of salt) potato chips, crackers with lots of salt....

Also I am now 52 & they finally found a med for the change of life migraines that occur but I no longer have the week long ones...but if I do not have that med with me I always have regular strength midal...I take 3 of those & drink a very large cup or 2 of black coffee with sugar in it.....the sugar gets the stomach acids going & breaks down the midal faster...something in the midal they use to ease cramps will help the migraine...do not use the extra strength midal for some reason it won't work but the regular stuff they have always had works....now you may get a ghost migraine...its where the full force migraine has gone but you can feel a small one on the side of your head just waiting to hit you....if you have those & you will know what I am talking about because everyone who I know that gets migraines gets these when the big migraine goes away....anyway stay away from the foods listed above for a good 24 hours after the ghost headache or regular migraine has gone or it could come back & be even worse!.....some people also use cold packs on their head...that alwasy made mine worse so once I tried a hot towel & that helped me...I now have a small heating pad that stays on my bed just so I have it if I get a migraine in the middle of the night or go to bed with one....I get migraines in my sleep so I wake up with them also.....sucks big time but what can you do.....raising my son when he was a toddler was very hard as they don't have a off button or a low volume button that you can hit...& if I told him momma had a headache that made it worse.....think running to me yelling 'Momma is your headache all better' over & over all day....lol...so sweetie I feel your pain literally & hope this will help you....Michele'

Oh how wonderful the Gaterade and GA ice chips sound! We use the cool wash cloth trick way too often. In every bathroom in the house we have washcloths for bathing, and another stack for headaches. I love love the idea of the chips, you can reach for them without spilling, or trying to sit up to take a SIP of water!! I'm going to buy a supply of GA, just to keep for this! Thank you Darlene.

Glad you're feeling better! I've never been diagnosed with migraines because when I have a severe headache, I don't feel like going to the doctor!

I have had the nausea associated with migraines as well as sensitivity to light and noise. As someone mentioned earlier, read the labels on OTC meds; Excedrine contains aspirin, tylenol, and caffiene and works for me. If I don't have that, I'll take 800mg Ibuprofen with a small amount of coke or coffee, then lie down with the cold cloth on my forehead and eyes.

I agree with the suggestion of magnesium, but don't do like I did and buy a combination of magnesium, calcium, and zinc (thought I'd shoe more than one horse at a time!). I developed mouth sores and I was told that zinc can do that. Dehydration does not help matters so drink lot of water. Ginger ale can help with the nausea (the ginger in it). If you can't keep it down, pour the ginger ale in an ice tray, let it freeze, then make GA ice chips. Gatorade ice chips are good, too.

Great suggestions from everyone--just find what works for you. I'll be praying.

I'm so touched by all the advice, ladies. I am headache free today, and my energy OS returning so quickly. Made it to church on time, came home weeded the garden, and started a few types of bread! Thank you all for lifting me up! I'm so thankful for all your suggestions. I don't take any magnesium, and am very bad, and eat cheese a lot!! Lol. I'm will certainly start behaving, and being more proactive in prevention. Sad my Dr's medicate, and will not educate. Again, thank you all.

Lots of good suggestions here. I suffered severe migraines from childhood thru menopause. The one thing not mentioned here is guided imagery..it's a kind of self hypnosis. You can google it and there are lots of tapes on the internet that can help. www.soundstrue.com has some good tapes. I have been praticing and teaching this for about 25 years. I have used this with cancer patients, teen-agers and substance abusers on a regular basis. Sometimes I make people a specific tape just for them, depending on the disease we're treating. The thing is that you have to listen to the tape on a regular basis almost until you could do it in your sleep. I use this with my patients alot and it helps. There are no drugs involved..it's pretty cheap and I know it helps. If this appeals to you also consider biofeedback. If you want more info. please e-mail me. So sorry for the pain you're feeling and sure hope you get some relief soon. Joey

Annette, I had suffered terrible headaches for a few years and my eye doctor recommended I start taking magnesium supplements. He had told me to take double the recommended dose for my weight because the body only processes about half of what you take in. Long story short - I'm headache free! :) I wouldn't recommend taking anything without consulting your physician first, but I swear by the magnesium, truly! I totally back Kathy on that one! :) I'll say a prayer for you, I know how miserable it can be. Hugs - Nini

It's the aged cheeses that do it like sharp cheddar, ham and other cured meats also do it as do diet drinks and sugar substitutes. Funny thing about the different Excedrins, if you read the labels you will find the Migrain formula is the same as regular Excedrin. Also Excedrin is a known factor in bounce back migraines. Magnesium is an important mineral in preventing them so taking a vitamin or magnesium supplement can help. I have been seeing an excellant nuerologist for years and he has been really informative.

I'm with Tina - give acupuncture or acupressure a try. I had really bad headaches for awhile after a concussion I suffered. The acupuncture and Chinese medicine did wonders for me. Hope you feel better soon!

I've heard not to eat cheese, or lots of red meat, but grapes? I haven't heard that. I'm not a big grape eater, but I do love grape juice and jelly...
Thanks for all the info everyone. I'm gonna throw dinner together, and go to bed....

I don't know much about migranes except you should stay away from cheese because it has something in it that triggers migranes. I wish I could help you. I had a friend who would get them and it was horrible. I sure hope someone comes up with a cure.

Annette,

I am so sorry for your pain and know it too well. I have suffered from Migraines since I was a child and I know how debilitating they can be.

I have found that the moment I feel even a tinge of a headache I down alot of water. This seems to help a little bit. Cold Pepsi and 3 Excedrin Tension Headache tablets usually work for me. It may take a couple of hours but it has helped me. I have not tried any prescription meds other than 800 mg Motrin which did nothing.
I used to try the Excedrin Migraine tablets but found that the Excedrin Tension Headache works better for a migraine.(weird I know)

Other than that, cold compresses, I do sometimes use a headache relief inhaler with peppermint and lavender that I got from Connie (Nature Maiden here on MJF).

I am praying for you!

I think imitrex is a sulfa based drug. I think that's the one I used to borrow from my ex-MIL, and because of the base, I was asleep in minutes, and comatose for hours.:(

I feel for you as I suffer with them too and they are now at a chronic state never going away for more than a day or two. Topamax is the one that they are pushing now as a prevenative, it is a long used seizure med with horrible side affects and it doesn't agree with me. To get rid of one that has started I use Zomig, it is prescription and not cheap but works fast (within minutes), the other med that will stop one quick is Imitrex. Neither make me drowzy or stoned feeling. If you get dehydrated it will make the pain worse so try your best to keep fluids in you.

My daughter has had migraines for yrs, accupressure is the only thing that works for her, and believe you me, she has tried them all at least 3x...Try to find a licensed therapist, or one with high recomendations, and I hope this helps...

My daughter suffers with migraines and they have put her on a new med, I think its called topamax or something like that. It comes with the longest and scariest list of side effects but she is taking it anyway. She has had only one headache since she started this new drug. I think I would rather have a headache than the side effects from this drug but then I don't suffer with migraines. Hope you find some relief soon.
