Posted - Apr 29 2011 : 08:37:51 AM Have any farmgirls read this?
I've been ravenously reading this for a few days--rhe book even calls to me, sitting in my passenger seat when I'm at a stoplight (I do refrain!). Set in the 1920's through post WWII Arizona and New Mexico, this story is about a girl, then young woman, then wife and mother, Lily Casey, who is tough as nails, independent and amazingly soulful. For those of you working large parcels of land with animals and very few folks nearby, this might be your journal.
My review isn't very succinct, but I'm still in the midst. Here is what the NYT said about it. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/18/books/review/Schillinger-t.html

Posted - May 26 2011 : 07:35:04 AM Glass Castles is next on my list after finishing up "Pug Hill" a cute little romance about an art restorer in NYC. For Mother's Day, I gave my mil a copy of Half Broke Horses and a fancy bar of chocolate for an "afternoon off" and she said she'd LOVED Glass Castles! She apparently read it because Oprah told her to , and wanted to always get this book, but never got around to it.
I just love it--and I'm buying a copy of Glass Castles this weekend. The stories remind me so much of my poor Daddy's childhood--though from the voice of women, he lived during this time and had 2 very difficult parents who eventually abandoned him. The pain and the strength that comes from the pain, the no nonsense, take no prisoners attitude reminds me so much of him.

Posted - May 25 2011 : 9:29:56 PM Just finished Glass Castles yesterday...it WAS good. Sure makes me feel bad for ever feeling like my own life had some hard times. Not compared to her. Wow.

Posted - May 20 2011 : 07:41:26 AM I know what you mean, JP. I realized trying to read 7 books (no joke) at the same time doesn't work too well!!

Posted - May 19 2011 : 6:46:19 PM Read it through my book club. Hm......a good read, and a good peek into a life that takes courage.
Judy, I have also found it inhibiting to try and keep to my book club choice reading. It takes away from my freedom of reading!!!

Posted - Apr 30 2011 : 09:42:07 AM I loved both those books. The Glass Castle is the name of the other one, which I read first but I wished I had done it the other way around. The writing is amazing in both - I had the same reaction Jonni - couldn't put them down!! Amy Grace
