Posted - Jul 22 2008 : 4:36:39 PM The thing I love about making these bags are, they're easy, they get done in no time and you feel so good to have accomplished something, not to mention not having to use plastic bags all the time. I must say sewing with the cat food bags was interesting because it is such slippery stuff. I think maybe next time i will put some newspaper under it while I am stitching on the fabric band, and then I can just rip that off when I am done.
I used some upholstery fabric samples someone gave me years ago for the stripey and the flowery ones, and I'm just now looking at some curtain material i got at goodwill...
Definitely an easy project to start with, have fun!

Posted - Jul 22 2008 : 12:56:50 PM Hi Karin! These are so great! It makes me want to make some myself! What a good idea. I want to eliminate the plastic bags we get from the grocery stores and this is a perfect and crafty way to do so! I am beginning to learn to sew. Do you think this would be a good beginners project at all?

Posted - Jul 20 2008 : 07:31:34 AM Thank you. I guess what I am appreciating most about my shopping bags is, I can get them done! That feels like such an accomplishment when I haven't managed to get any of the things I planned on even started.
Clare, what great news about your ultrasound, you sure have had a time of it. You look so great in your Wizard of Oz apron. I got a wonderful apron pattern from a little pattern company that makes clothes I like, goofy old hippie specials, but really have to clear off my whole sewing table to cut it out...It is so nice to see everyone else's aprons, now if my body would just cooperate with my brain.....

Posted - Jul 20 2008 : 06:28:17 AM Karin, love the variety of styles and fabric choices for your bags. Aren't colorful and personal totes so much more fun than the plain jane variety? I like how you embellished a few of them.
Your cat is one lucky cat to have a Snail's Trail quilt to sleep on. Great contrast in fabrics, really stands out and is beautiful.

Posted - Jul 20 2008 : 04:15:50 AM The bags are great! Try using a heavyweight needle, like a denim needle, when you sew the cat food bags. I'm going to try making one from my chicken feed bag. Sharon

thank you girls, I guess I just was focusing on the sloppy stitches on the cat food ones, they are wicked to sew, they slither around while I'm attempting to make a vaguely straight seam....I do feel better shopping now dragging in my own shopping bags, much nicer than the thin plastic one at my supermarket, I used to drop them and send things rolling down the driveway.....
Today i was in a store and the cashier was looking for the price on my cloth bag, so I guess that one passed muster. She told me "Oh I should have realized it was handmade, it's very well made." which was kind of her.
Finally tonight we got some rain, thunder lightning, but most importantly torrents of rain, I expect things to look perked up in my garden tomorrow....

Posted - Jul 18 2008 : 2:47:51 PM Karin, those are great. I made a bunch of shopping bags a couple months ago. I made them from some upholstery samples and old pillow cases I had. I didn't think they were all that great myself, but I get a lot of complements on them and I even sold a few. I never thought about using animal feed bags. I save the dog food bags because they hold a lot of grass clippings, compost or whatever I need to haul home and they're VERY durable.

Posted - Jul 17 2008 : 1:15:44 PM I guess i was just feeling like I didn't do the best job on some of them. I guess I'm going to have to hunt down my sewing machine needles, I'm pretty sure I killed the one in there making the caat food bags. Those are for my refrigerator stuff, I must admit they are very useful. My fibro and arthritis is just not helping me with any of these projects i want to be doing.....
