Posted - Dec 06 2009 : 10:24:39 AM My 20 year old tree skirt saw its final Christmas last year. I went out in search of a new one. Boy, is anything NOT made in China anymore? Every single tree skirt I found was, and on top of that they were regularly priced at $50 cdn a pop. Ouch!
I decided I would make one. My next stop was a Salvaton Army Thrift Store. Guess what I found there? 3.5 yards of beautiful deep red damask with poinsetta flowers on it. I couldn't believe my luck. The price? Less than $10. I took it home, found a pattern online, and in one afternoon, voila... an elegant tree skirt!
I think there was a bit of serendipity going on, because the pattern called for 3 yards of fabric. What luck to find something like that at a thrift store!
Don't you just love thrift stores? |

Posted - Dec 13 2009 : 12:15:38 PM Good job not buying a made in China tree skirt! Aren't thrift stores wonderful? Your new tree skirt is beautiful. Wish there were more people like you. If we all quit buying items made in China people in the U.S. would be able to find jobs and we most likely would have better quality items.

Posted - Dec 09 2009 : 1:41:25 PM I just used a lining on the back...the fabric is quite heavy and thick as it is, so I didn't use batting at all. It was very quick to make and I used an online pattern. There's actually a video tutorial for it, but it's quite simple to make. Simple was what I was looking for ;-)

Posted - Dec 09 2009 : 01:15:07 AM Your treeskirt is beautiful!! I think you did just the right thing not putting fringe on it. That was a great bargain you got on the fabric, and I commend your resourcefulness!! Bravo !

Posted - Dec 06 2009 : 7:36:13 PM Hi! Well I am new to this club and very excited at being here :) I LOVE thrift stores also! I visit our salvation army ALL the time. First time I took my 5 year old grandson with me and told him where we were going he asked ( will we be shot? ) lol..I made several tree skirts this year out of vintage Christmas fabric that I either found there or found on ebay. I sell them at my antique booths here in Ardmore, Oklahoma :) Health issue's keep me home most of the time so making things for my booth for income is a must. If ya'll haven't looked on ebay you need to check, I have found some GREAT deals on vintage fabric there! Nancy M.

Posted - Dec 06 2009 : 11:21:32 AM Great find! I would love to see a pic of your new Christmas goody. :) I had to remake mine last year. Unfortunately, sewing isn't as much my fort'e as crocheting is, so I crocheted mine. Isn't it fun when you get all done and know you created something that will become a holiday classic at your house? ;) hugs,
Jessie
