Posted - Feb 04 2010 : 07:25:15 AM I bought a sewing machine a few years ago, brand new, and as of 3 weeks ago, it was still in the box. A baby, very little time, no sewing lessons available, have made me procrastinate. My New Years vow was to get the thing out and put it together and get started....but then there was that darn instruction manual!!! It read like a medical book, and the diagrams were horrible. So I glazed over.
I asked my husband to help because he's mechanically inclined. He said, "sure" then never helped...
So last night he said, "how bout you make dinner, and I get your sewing machine set up!!!" And he did, and we sewed scraps all night long!!!
Now, to start with a simple pattern and instead of coveting fabric, I can actually utilize it!!!

Posted - Feb 15 2010 : 7:09:59 PM I saw a skirt in Mary Jane's somewhere that was just two side seams, a casing for elastic and a hem. That would be easy to do. Enjoy your machine. I couldn't live without mine. My DH sews too. He made duffel bags when he was in the Navy and earned extra money doing it. Have fun with your new hobby.

Posted - Feb 15 2010 : 4:10:56 PM congrats that i so exciting! i know it can be intimidating at first, but the most important thing is learning to thread it right, lol. use some old sheets to make a curtain or something simple- just to get a feel for the machine, and such. then you can adjust the stitches too and get a feel for the machine. connie

Posted - Feb 11 2010 : 04:48:09 AM What a sweetie he is. My husband bought, set up, and taught me to use mine as well. My mom was never a sewer and anything I sewed was by hand.
Sounds like you've got a keeper!

Posted - Feb 06 2010 : 01:01:51 AM LOL! Sounds like me. My DH set mine up for a month before I got how the thread went. Good thing his mom sewed. Have fun! i need to get mine checked out before i use it more. It sounds like the needle and the bobin are taping. :(

Posted - Feb 04 2010 : 1:30:57 PM I was thinking after I posted that while you are at work, I would not put it past him to whip up a jacket or learn how to serge. |

Posted - Feb 04 2010 : 1:23:44 PM Thanks so much for the suggestion...I was oohing and aahing over the Sew Mama Sew site a few weeks ago, thinking, "if I could only sew!!!" I'm glad to know there are some basics.
I will send Jus out to Georgetown, Lisa....don't feel like an idiot, Justin said, "it's much easier than it looks, hun. When you get a moment, I'll show you how to wind a bobbin and we'll work with some medium weight fabric...."

Posted - Feb 04 2010 : 11:58:02 AM That is great your machine set up:) If my husband had to do that.....I think he would sew himself together!! LOL Another good "fun" "simple" project is a pincushion. Just like a pillow, simple and then embellish with what you want...ribbon, buttons etc... You are right, the possibilities are endless!

Posted - Feb 04 2010 : 10:28:29 AM Jonni I have the same dilemma. Jim bought me one for ChristmaS 2008 & while it is out of the box, it is so far collecting dust. It even has a DVD. & to make me feel even more idiotic, when I read the reviews online, one said "THis was such a simple easy machine for my 8 yo granddaughter!" So apparently I am NOT smarter than a 4th grader!! But, I am all caught up with work, so maybe, just MAYBE Tell Jus, I am proud of him. Send him to Georgetown. |

Posted - Feb 04 2010 : 08:04:36 AM It really was, Alee...I just kept looking at it in the corner, feeling like that instruction manual was taking up the whole room! Secretly, I think he really enjoyed all the "bells and whistles" and the stitch variants. He kept switching them and I finally had to say, "can I try?" :P

Posted - Feb 04 2010 : 08:01:03 AM Well...I'm a total newbie. I usually sew by hand, so it feels like the possibilities are endless!
Any suggestions on something simple to start? What about pillows, simple curtains (hemmed), etc...I really want to be good by summer to make some dresses for Violet.
