I went to our Thrift Store here in town & imagine my surprise to see a treadle sewing machine-and it works! What a bargain for $25. I couldn't resist. Mow I am having trouble figuring out how to thread the thing! I am wondering if anyone knows how or a place to find the directions. It has Lake Shore written on it. Thanks.

there is an old thread on the forum here - I'd say a year or two ago at LEAST - a huge thread on treadles,that has TONS of links and info...TONS. I would look for that, if you can search for it..... it is what inspired me to get my treadles :) |

Anyone have some hints on threading it? As you can see there is no tension knob like most of them but i think the screw at the top is for the tension. But the big pointed thing in front has a groove in it that looks like it could be for the thread? Now have I got you totally confused?!?

It doesn't have the typical tension knob but a screw on top of the machine. Also the bobbins is a long 2 inch thing! The bobbins is inside of this 2 inch casing. Will have to keep looking.

What I have found in the older machines is the importance of threading the needle from the right direction. My Singer featherweight quit sewing and it was because I tried to thread the needle from left to right, but it had to be from right to left, My other machines are threaded front to back thru the needle. I would try from the thread spool, to a thread quide on the top or the side, thru the tension wheel, thru the head and down to the thread quard and last the needle. If it doesnt sew, change the direction you thread the needle. I learned to sew on a treadle when I was 5 yrs old, I am now almost 69. Also, you may have to try several bobbins before you get one that will fit correctly, and ofcourse you thread the bobbin so if you hold it in your right hand and pull the thread with you left hand the bobbin will turn clock wise. Sometimes when I need info on something and don't know where to start looking, I go my search engine on the Internet such as google or go to www.ask.com and try typing in the words...How to thread a treadle sewing machine....push enter. It might answer the question or at least give you other options.

Great find, I got mine last year for 35 dollars, paid to have it serviced and it looked like a brand new machine when I got it back. Just beatiful! I need some more practice on it tho. Enjoy yours, Carol

My Singer is one of the heavy metal ones & I wouldn't trade it for the world. However the feeddogs just quit working the other night so i am going to have it fixed. It is over 36 y/o & works great!

You can usually find a good older sewing machine in Thrift stores. I have come across 3 recently. All working, ranging in price from $35 to $75. They all have had metal heads, not plastic.
Also, you just might put the word out that you are looking for a good old sewing machine, you just never know who might have one they are not using anymore, and they might even "gift" it to you!
Happy hunting and FINDING of that machine. Garage sales work too!

Karla, I searched and searched for a Lake Shore treadle online and only found an expired ad on craigslist.com for one that had been for sale. I also found this: http://www.motherearthnews.com/Modern-Homesteading/1975-03-01/How-To-Care-For-A-Treadle-Sewing-Machine.aspx near the bottom of the article on page two they talk about a couple of books that might help you.... Also, I have found my local mom & pop run sew and vac places to be incredibly helpful and knowledgeable they may be able to track one down for you. Good luck!

They had a couple of Singers at the thrift store also. It said they worked-you might check your thrift store-maybe they would have one. I have bought them at garage sales but I make them show me how they work before I buy! & that the how to manual is with it. I hadn't heard of a Lake Shore before so will have to do a little research.

Wow...what a great find. I would love just to find a basic used sewing machine
that works and doesn't need rocket science technology to operate...so, I can
use it for crafting. If anyone hears of one cheap...let me know. I think the old
Treadle Machines are very cool though! Don't you just love a great find??? Always,
makes my day...even if it is a little bag of vintage ribbon or buttons...I am a
