Posted - Jul 05 2010 : 9:44:17 PM Hello - I've taken up crochet this year and wonder how to block large pieces. I'm making a shawl (circular) at the moment and will need to block it. Everything I have done up to this point has been small and I just pin it down to a piece of styroform (I've been doing vintage hats, purses, kitchen and bath accessories)in the same manner I block my tatting. For this larger piece, I thought of spreading a sheet out and pinning the edging to it. Would that work? |

Posted - Jul 08 2010 : 12:28:19 PM Catherine - thank you for the suggestions, and just in time. I am on the last edging row and anxious to block the shawl. I would never have thought of the floor tiles. What a great idea. |

Posted - Jul 07 2010 : 05:56:08 AM Catherine, what a great idea, the foam blocks and easy storage too! I have never done very large pieces but it's great to know how to block them. Does anyone starch their smaller stuff? I usually do my doilies with liquid starch, so easy. thanks, Denise

Posted - Jul 06 2010 : 9:25:03 PM I use blocking wires, fine but sturdy wires that go through the edge stitches and then pin those down. Some knitting companies sell sets of the blocking wires, but you can do the same thing using a lot of pins, just takes longer LOL. For big pieces, you can pin on top of a spare bed. Or even bigger pieces, if you will do then every so often, buy those foam puzzle piece shaped floor tiles they sell in toy stores. Lock them together into a large mat and pin on that. To store, just unlock the foam puzzle pieces. OR if you have a carpet in a spare room that can get damp, pin on top of that. HTH!
