Posted - Dec 08 2010 : 6:47:36 PM So, next week I turn 50 and was considering buying myself a spinning wheel. I learned on one a friend made. It wasn't the best, but it worked. My question is...What brand do you like, and what are good sites that sell them. I live in W. WA, so if any of you know of shops in the Olympia/Tacoma area that sell wheels...

Posted - Dec 20 2010 : 10:51:39 AM Sarita, I do have a drop spindle. It was my first entry into the spinning world. I do like using it a lot. I saw it being used at a state fair and bought one.
Thanks Karen, I will check out the website.
Patty, thanks for the info. A pre-loved wheel would be just a good as a new, and would fit the budget better too.

Posted - Dec 17 2010 : 10:38:42 AM I have an Ashford Traveller and love it very much. It's a single drive with scotch tension and works well with everything I've spun: shetland, Warhill, alpaca etc. they are pricy new but if you get on www.ravelry.com and look into their marketplace groups like "spinners marketplace" people will sell you their wheels they no longer want and you can sometimes get a great deal. Posted - Dec 15 2010 : 6:03:38 PM Julia, I have 2 wheels at the moment, one is a Babe Fiberstarter and the other is Ashford Traditional (both used). The Babe is nice good entry wheel and I have talked to some production spinners that use their Babes all the time. http://www.babesfibergarden.com/ The Ashford I just got a about a month ago and still testing to see which one I'll keep. Posted - Dec 11 2010 : 11:49:48 AM Jennifer, I had 4 wheels and it is funny, I love my louet S10 better than any of them. I think it is what you learn on and become acustom to. I hope you can find the wheel just for you...Happy Spinning.

Posted - Dec 11 2010 : 03:40:45 AM I suggest putting the Louet on Craigslist and taking the proceeds and putting it towards an Ashford. Or would that be offensive to the friend who gave it to you? it is such a shame to have you now spinning . . . Marianne |

Posted - Dec 10 2010 : 10:32:56 AM I learned on an Ashford and loved it. A friend gave me a Louet she no longer wanted which is supposed to be good, but I just can't get used to it and have set spinning aside. Anyone have any suggestions? I can't afford to get a new one and I am thakful for the gift. |

Posted - Dec 09 2010 : 09:16:23 AM I have a Kromski Minstrel from The Woolery, and I just love it. It is an upright (castle) style wheel, so it takes up less space too than the traditional saxony wheel.

Posted - Dec 09 2010 : 08:41:48 AM I have always had my eye on the Ashford Traveller. Seems kind of fun thinking of taking it wherever I want.
Thanks Angie and Sheri for the names of the 2 places. I will check them out.
Jenny, I love your tagline!

Posted - Dec 08 2010 : 10:08:41 PM I just found one today in Tacoma. It's called Lambs Ear. She has the coolest shop chock full of yarn. It's on Pacific Ave. She had a set of carders that I bought, my first set. And there was a beautiful Ashford spinning wheel in the back of the store where she teaches classes. Pretty compact and beautiful wood. Maybe some day, once I learn how the basics. =)
