For those of you that use hand crank sewing machines, I was wondering what your favorite one is and why. I have 3 treadle machines that I absolutely love and am contemplating looking for a hand crank. Thanks |

I actually sewed an outfit(back when Dinosaures walked the earth-late 1970's)on my (formally my Grandmother's)White 1912 Treadle machine,,,and all I can say is:
1. women back then must have had some thick ankles! lol!
2. Thank Goodness for electricity! lol!
actually, it wasn't 'sew' bad, I just had to remember to stop peddleing when I was getting ready to stop stitching as the needle would go up & down a few more times before it came to a complete stop.
As for the hand crank models, I have: a Western Electric(not sure of the date) and a 1893 Singer,,,I have operated them both but never really sewn anything on them except a swatch of fabric to see how they work. Again~Thank Goodness for Electricity! They both have the spindle type bobbins not the tyipical little round bobbins.
If you have ever watched the comedy "The Three Amigos" (Chevy Chase), toward the end there is a scene where all the ladies in the little town, stitching away on hand crank machines!

I have a Vickers hand crank. Its real easy. You don't think so,but it is. Vicki Sister 280 |

yes, I have seen others use the hand crank and they say it is not as difficult as you think
I have a treadle which I don't use. But, I can't imagine sewing without both hands free to manipulate the fabric.
Do you have to crank at the same time you sew?
