Posted - Mar 19 2012 : 5:52:11 PM I am ready to upgrade from my little hand-me-down Kenmore sewing machine to one with more than 6 stitches. It doesn't need to do embroidery, as I have a White embroidery machine. I would really like to have a lot of stitches available, not so much the decorative ones, but the various zig-zags and such. I mostly use the machine for baby items and quilting, and I want to make some clothing, too.
There is a Singer Quantum Stylist coming on sale at Costco.com at the end of the month for 329.99 delivered instead of the normal 479.99 The reviews on Amazon are mostly raving, but I don't know if Singer is the best brand to be getting?
I would like to have the option of an extension table or one included would be great.
Any of you ladies have a machine you adore that is affordable-ish?

Posted - Mar 24 2012 : 01:40:48 AM It is astounding how much it can cost if the computer goes out in one of these machines! I wish more companies still offered just a plain workhorse version. Marianne |

Posted - Mar 22 2012 : 05:49:33 AM I had a New Home Memory Craft 8000 that I loved with all the embroidery features, but a few months ago something went on the computer and when I got a quote to fix it, was told $700.00 minimum. My hubby said no, it cost me almost $4000.00 with all the accessories back 18 years ago. A new one now is $7800.00!!! I just got a Brother computerized one that has alot of the same stitches, just not the embroidery, but so far I like it. That is all I need now at this point in my life.

Posted - Mar 21 2012 : 8:49:20 PM I love bernina too, but they don't have a whole lot of stitches, the older ones that is. But, that's what I love too. Especially the older ones! But, my next thing on my wish list is a elna! lol haha yup yup. I heard they are just as good as bernina but with a odd sound. However, my main thing I want the elna for though is the diskettes that allow more stitches.

Posted - Mar 21 2012 : 8:16:58 PM Check out Bernina. I've had one for 39 years & the new ones are great too. I find the basic ones are just good solid running machines. Judy

Posted - Mar 21 2012 : 7:19:00 PM I don't know many people who like newer singers, that are only a few hundred dollars, the good ones are thousands.
I have thought about this myself, and I think I would get a old elna, with the disc that you change out, they seem to have a lot of really cute stitches you can buy. (you buy a disc for each stitch). It's not a computer though it's old manual kind. And there's tons on ebay.

Posted - Mar 19 2012 : 7:03:07 PM I've only had 2 machines in my life and both where Kenmore & loved dearly...But all I can say is swtiching over from the 17year old basic Kenmore I got when I was 13 to a new one was amazing!!! Whatever you get will probably feel like a vast improvement, but I've never used a Singer so Iam a poor judge. :D |
