Posted - Oct 22 2015 : 7:57:05 PM I am excited to begin working on my merit badges and sharing my experiences with everyone! After much debating I was finally able to pick the top 4 badges I plan to accomplish first! I chose….
1.Pampered Pets (Outpost) -It’s important to me that my pets are healthy and will live a long happy life. Knowing what is best for them will allow me to enhance their life.
2. Bread Making (Farm Kitchen) -I have always enjoyed cooking and now look forward to a better way of cooking.
3. Embroidery (Stitching and Crafting) - Would love to make something special for my baby boy just like my Grandma Butters made for me.
4. Water Conservation (Cleaning Up) - I love the idea of helping save the planet as well as help me save money on my bill.
With that in mind, what merit badges do you fellow farmgirls plan on accomplishing first? Or working towards right now? Any of them hold a special meaning that drives you to accomplish one over another?
Much luck and enjoyment in your merit badge experiences!

Posted - Aug 25 2025 : 7:58:27 PM I read a wonderful book titled Grandma Gatewood Walks. It is the story of Emma Gatewood. She walked the Appalachian Trail start to finish from May-September. Here are five things I learned about her. 1.Emma Gatewood was the first female that walked the Appalachian Trail. 2. She was 67 the first time she walked the trail. 3. She walked the trail 2 more times, once more at the age of 69, another walk through. 4.She also walked the 2,000 mile Oregon Trail. 5. She was the mother of 11 children and after 33 years of marriage, she divorced her horribly abusive husband.

Posted - Aug 23 2025 : 7:00:26 PM I love your pictures, Debbie, especially the chicken. Some friends of ours have a gorgeous oil painting of a rooster that they have up on display in their barn. It looks wonderful there. It's hung really high so no animals can get at it. I'll be looking forward to seeing your oil paintings. I'm looking forward to getting back to working on badges once I'm finished a big sock spinning project.

Posted - Aug 22 2025 : 2:32:57 PM Here are my finished 4 Watercolors for my Intermediate Make it Pretty Badge. I have found that I need to relax and not stress over my art and I need lots of help with shading and blending. Next is a painting with oils for my expert badge, now that’s a challenge.

Posted - Aug 13 2025 : 3:17:07 PM Yes exactly what Heather said. The books are what take me the longest, but I will finish all the tasks required for the first badge and then start the second set of tasks.
Way to go Heather on finishing the book! Hopefully you get time soon to apply for them.

Posted - Aug 12 2025 : 6:11:05 PM They do have to be requested separately and you have to earn the beginner first. Sometimes though when working on them something takes longer (like reading a book) and the advanced gets finished first.

Posted - Aug 12 2025 : 1:58:10 PM Can you ask for more than one level at a time? I thought each level had to be requested separately.

Posted - Aug 04 2025 : 6:30:18 PM I'm working on the immediate level of the Her-Story merit badge. I chose the autobiography, "Reaching for the Moon: The Autobiography of NASA Mathematician Katherine Johnson." It was such an interesting read, I learned: 1. Katherine was born in 1918 in White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia, the youngest of 4 children. 2. She was gifted and skipped a few grades in school, causing her to graduate from high school at age 14 and start college at 15. 3. She was a middle school teacher of mathematics and science. She met her first husband there, and they had 3 girls together. He tragically passed away due to a brain tumor when she was 38. She remarried a few years later. 4. She worked for NASA, programming analytical codes and pathways for rocket launches. Her calculations put Apollo 11 into space and helped Neil Armstrong land on the moon. 5. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and at 97 years old, wrote her autobiography.

Posted - Aug 04 2025 : 2:48:51 PM It's so interesting to hear about your bee-keeping adventures, Shennandoah!! It's something I've thought about, but we have bees across the road who come and pollinate my garden. I'm on the allergic side so I think having someone else supplying my little pollinators is the way to go!

Posted - Aug 04 2025 : 1:45:33 PM I have still been working on my flag. I have started the waves to the red and white part of the flag, but they have been a little frustrating. I am struggling to keep them in line and have had to undo the knots many times. I am so close to finishing it though!
