Posted - Jul 13 2010 : 4:47:27 PM So, every tea cup and saucer set I own has been given to me. I love them so much because there is special meaning behind each one. Today was no exception. I was given an Old Country Roses cup & saucer set by one of my senior citizen clients who's wife died recently. She always told me that if there's anything in their house that I'd want, to let her know. There are just a few items but most of them are already designated to other friends. Today, knowing that I would like some of the cup & saucer sets, the husband told me to go pick a set to take home. He gave me first pick. I felt so honored and blessed that he thinks that highly of me. So, having my eye on the Old Country Roses set, that's the one I picked. I tearfully thanked him. Once home, I researched the set online. I thought it was a rare set now that was old. You can still buy the set at many retailers. However, it's the most popular set in the world. The value of just one cup and saucer is $45. Mind you, I don't sell my cherished items. Naturally, this got me curious and I started looking at all my cup & saucer sets to read the names on the bottoms. I don't know a lick about china dishes but now I'm curious. AND...I'm curious about the sets I gave away at Christmas time when I used a few of my sets to make candle gifts like the ones that were in MaryJanesFarm Nov/Dec 2009 issue. I'm not a collector of many things, just tea cup & saucer sets, really. I've never even thought about educating myself on brands and history. I may someday. But for now, I just like to enjoy looking at these pretty gifts that I have received and thinking about the givers of these lovely gifts. Do you have a special collection of something that you cherish?

Posted - Aug 14 2010 : 7:47:35 PM I LOVE my blue ball mason jars. I don't collect them though. About 10 years ago somebody in town was having a garage sale. They had literally a drawer full! It was a dresser drawer full of these jars. I think I paid $5 or so for all of them (can't remember). I still have a few of them floating around the house. Two in our bathroom...one for q-tips, the other for my make-up brushes. Some in the kitchen that I use as vases. Gives the rooms a 'country' touch.

Posted - Jul 26 2010 : 8:39:45 PM I too, have a treasured collection of teapots, teacups and saucers. They all belonged to my great grandmothers and grandmothers. My paternal great grandparents emigrated to the USA from England and Sweden in the 1880's. My maternal great grandparents came from Germany and Scotland. I also had an "adopted" grandmother who was really a family friend, but she gave me some special pieces that I used to play with at her house as a child. I have cups from all over the world and commemorating every visit members of the British Royal family has made to the USA since the late 1800's. Every so often I take a set out of the china cabinet and enjoy a cup of tea while I ponder the history of the cup and wonder what fascinating stories it could tell me.
I also have two sets of dishes that I started collecting as the result of finding pieces of the patterns in my grandmother's house after she died. I now have a complete set of Anchor Hocking Moonstone from the 1930's - 1940's. The other set is Johnson Brothers JB 66 china. Now that I have a house and a mortgage to pay off I've stopped collecting glass for the time being, but one day I would like to complete my collection of some depression glass patterns that my great grandmothers had in their houses, too.
Cheers! ~ Marilyn

Posted - Jul 25 2010 : 08:18:25 AM I collected tea cups when I was a teenager, but I got married at twenty and we moved 11 times in 4 years. My teacups got broken. I should start again. I enjoyed it. I used to have a collection of angels with my birth month on them, but they got all broken too. I have a handful left. My mother bought them all for me. I must remember to get the shelf for them hung today. We just moved AGAIN in May and I can't seem to remember to do it with everything else going on.

Posted - Jul 14 2010 : 9:12:10 PM I would love to hear the stories if our tea cups could talk too. It is so nice that you have your friends choose the cup they would like to use. Very special memory making with tea cups. Thanks for sharing your story.

well all my teacups are different. I have gotten them from estate sales, auctions, friends. I let my friends pick which one they want to use when we have tea. I often wonder what kind of stories they would tell if they could talk.

Posted - Jul 13 2010 : 9:41:02 PM Ladies, I am happy to say that I have a set of old tea cups that are a part of my dish set and I use them. I was wondering if it is the same pattern you recently received. Mine is called Franciscan Dessert Rose. I absolutly love them. When it is chilly out, I invite a few friends over for tea and you bet ya, I use my good tea cups and tea pot. I have received many cups and pieces to my dish set over the years. I think of my cousin Betty every time I use my gravy boat. She gave it to my husbnad and I for a wedding gift. She found it at an antique store. Cherished memories are a blessing. Thanks for sharing about your tea cup gift/memory and collection.

Posted - Jul 13 2010 : 6:32:50 PM I have a teacup and saucer collection and most of mine have a very interesting history. My favorite though is the one that came from my grandmother when I used to have tea with her when I was eight. She is the reason I love hot tea to this day.
