I have a hand grinder for processing relishes and and such things that need grinding. Sometimes a black substance from the grinder itself. It doesn't change the flavor any but looks nasty. The grinder is grinder is magic chef from the 79's when everything was Avacado green. Any thoughts?

It probably is aluminum. It started reacting with onions but not zucchini. It's a 1979's model. Got it out of my grandmothers stuff after she died. It makes me feel like she's there when I use it. I only use it for relishes.

I don't grease mine I would just clean it off.

Is your grinder aluminum? Sometimes that metal reacts with foods, my old ones does, I just wipe it off.

It seems like a grease or some type of corrosion. I don't grease the grinder. Do you think I should?

I would not use it until I knew it was 100% clean. Can you take it completely apart and do that?

Is it black like grease maybe? Some grinders have oil or grease that comes off of them. Unless it is like flakes of black. That could be part of something that has corroded maybe and is flaking off when it is used. Just a thought since you said it was from the 70's.
